How to Cozy Up Your Style for Fall
Follow these 9 easy steps for a cozier home that will help get you through the cold fall and winter months
As temperatures drop outside, adding some warmth to your interiors can help get you through the harshest winter months. Whether it’s little things, like swapping out lightbulbs and adding more candles and throws throughout your home, or bigger projects, like painting your walls darker shades and transforming nooks into snuggly hangouts, these nine decor tips will add a homey, cozy vibe to make staying indoors a lot more appealing.
2. Do some layering. A great way to achieve full-on coziness is by adding blankets, comforters or faux fur throws to create an extra layer of warmth. These soft materials will want to make you cuddle up and stay comfy all night long. Use them in bedrooms and family rooms – ideal spots for snuggling up with loved ones or all by yourself.

3. Bring in the green. As trees begin to lose their leaves and plants go into hibernation, it’s nice to bring some green into your home. Plants and flowers will inject some life to your interiors, especially when you don’t see any green out your windows. Contemporary homes, which can sometimes feel sterile, will especially benefit from the addition of plant life.
4. Go with full-height curtains and drapes. Opting for full-height curtains is a great way to feel cozy in cooler climates. Thicker curtains also help to keep the warm air inside the house. However, don’t forget to pull those heavy curtains back if your window receives direct sunlight – a rare resource in the darkest of winter months.
5. Turn to the dark side. Dark paint colors on walls will create warmth in a chic, modern way. When balanced with lighter-colored furniture or accessories, dark walls can become a focal point while feeling comfortable and snug. Television rooms are a great spot for dark-colored walls, because they can provide that movie theater effect.
6. Try Scandinavian style. If dark colors just aren’t for you, look to Scandinavia for some design inspiration. No one has quite mastered the contemporary, cozy feel the way the Scandinavians have. Even though Scandinavian style is modern and minimal, it still creates an inviting and homey atmosphere.
7. Light it up. Lighting can set different moods depending on the type of lightbulbs used. For fall and winter months, avoid cooler shades, such as clear and blue-tinted bulbs. To create a soothing setting, warmer lightbulbs like soft white or yellow-tinted ones are recommended. Edison bulbs give a nice warm glow and are now available in LED as well. Try grouping your lights together to create a warm focal point.

8. Don’t overlook those nooks. There’s perhaps no better place in a home to hang out when the temperatures drop than a nook. When you’re surrounded by walls in a snuggly corner, you will feel an immediate sense of intimacy and security. Warm up those nooks by adding pillows, throws and warm light.
9. Use all five senses. We often think about sight and touch when it comes to design: How does it look? How does it feel? But don’t forget about sounds. The sound of a crackling fire, whether real or recorded, will help warm your spirits. And when it comes to smells and tastes, get those kitchens humming. When creating a homey, warm atmosphere, nothing is more evocative than your sense of smell. Go ahead and make that coffee and hot chocolate or bake your favorite cookies and pies. Your nose and taste buds will thank you.

Remember to test scented candles before purchasing them to make sure the smell agrees with you. Woody scents, like pine, are a good way to remind you of campfires and the holiday season.
