Linen closet near hallway bathroom

Trying to determine if we should keep the door where it is as proposed by our architect or move it so that the linen closet is behind the door and incorporated more so as part of the bathroom. Pros? Cons?

That looks to be a good size linen closet. I suppose if all you want to keep in it is primarily the bathroom supplies then I would incorporate it with the bathroom. Keeping it separate likely gives you options to store other common household items there for easy access. I would be inclined to incorporate it. I've never seen such a set up anyway.

Keeping it as shown allows you to put a light switch on the left wall for a recessed light in front of the linen closet and then a light switch in the bathroom on the right next to the vanity.

"There's probably some risk that an in-bathroom linen closet will gradually have to share space with toiletries, hair dryers and such." kmcg, you've got that part right. I should have mentioned that my bathroom linen closet not only has the linen for the master bed and bath, but also extra toilet paper, soap, all sorts of extra toiletries, etc. And I keep my laundry basket ont the floor of the linen closet. The closet shelves are so much more accessible than storing stuff under my small vanity. So I like having a linen closet in the bathroom.

I have purchased some awsome IKEA products. My favorite is a long bench I put on wheels and my kids use this everyday with toy bins underneath. It is laminated and very easy to clean and sturdy. If you near an IKEA spend a day and feel the products as every product is on display. I have seen some not so quality items but for the price.... Are you and IKEA family member? They give monthly discounts and offers via e-mail and you can log on to the website for the current offers at each store. Most of the systems are 2 person jobs though so make sure you recruit help. First off since you mentioned you have another closet that you're using for the towels in which this closet was meant for I'd bring the towels back into the bathroom. Like oilpainter mentioned it's not always good to keep your meds near damp places. We had two linen closets in our last home and this is how I used them.... Like I mentioned above, I kept the towels in the deep closet in the bathroom, where they are used the most. No one got got undressed just to realize they'd forgotten and towel having yell for someone to please hand on in through the door. Buy your self a couple over the door clear pocket fabric-like shoe storage. They have four vertical rows with five pockets in each row. Being there were four in our family, we each had our own row to store our bath and beauty supplies in. It worked out for use that no one needed the bottom pocket so that was used for items we all used such as baby powder and oil, extra bar soap and toothpaste. In the other linen closet we had in the hall that wasn't as deep we stored out bed sheets with the smaller bed sheets near the bottom and the larger sheets near the top. Extra pillow slips were on a shelf between them. The top shelf was used for muscle massagers and such. This door also had an over the door shoe holder. In this one we had the everything needed for owies and muscle creams. Basically a first aid kit that had easy access even while someone was locked in the bathroom taking a shower. We lived there for fifteen years and never had a problem finding what we needed. I even used these over the door shoe storage in the coat closet with each of us having our own row for hats scarves and mittens. Oh and those shorty umbrellas? They fit just fine too. Sheets were in the hall linen closet closer to the bedrooms.

SummitStudios-Yes. What I really wanted was a 1.5 story, but at least in my area, they are the most expensive build. My husband really wanted our oldest’ room above the garage. My kids are 7,10, and 11 now, so we really need good spaces for them (I hate the small kids bedroom trend). The most practical thing was the one story with a fully finished basement. Deciding to move the oldest’room to the basement also made the exercise room move to the main floor. I think it will be nice. The view from that corner will be awesome and we can get more enjoyment from windows on 2 sides of that room that 2 sides of the master. Our flip home only has one small window in the master, so the wall of windows/door in the new build should be a huge improvement. Although I don’t have a huge desire for yons of light coming in my master! DevotedDame-Thank you for your ideas. I am just hoping that I can take some out of the box ideas and join them with what the draftsperson comes up with. I do realize I am asking for something complicated. But it seems to me that I should try to make it work before giving up on things that I have wanted....that haven’t really changed from my want list over the last 6-9 months.

It's cheaper to buy doors for a closet than a cabinet to go with your vanity. jackowskib's comment is valid - if it's solely for the bathroom, then incorporate into the bathroom. But if it's going to contain sheets and blankets for all the bedrooms it's fine the way it is. I had a linen closet about this size in my previous house and everyone who visited was jealous. If you're like me and you have too many sets of sheets it's invaluable. Not everyone has one.

What will be stored there?
If it is all bathroom supplies, I would incorporate it.
If it will also hold sheets/blankets, I would leave it as is.
If it were my house (which has very limited storage) I would leave it as it because it’s more versatile. It can hold towels or toiletries, if needed, but it could be used for bed linens, wrapping or craft supplies, etc.

Thanks all! Super valid points. Especially on the light fixture. I love an excuse to have another cool light. And yes, it will store other things beyond bathroom “stuff”, like linens etc.

I have a large linen closet at then end of my upstairs hallway - while I do store towels + other bathroom supplies, it also is used to store my MANY linen duvet sets + cotton sheet sets + extra euro shams + coverlets + etc. My daughters have told me that I need to go to find a ”beddingaholics” group to join!

I’m happy that it’s separate from my bathrooms + I like having a recessed light above it so I can see everything better. Otherwise, it would be difficult to tell my melange charcoal linen duvet set from my melange indigo gray duvet set! 😂
