Can I mix oak and white trim in same room?

Remodeling primary bed and bath. I am thinking of painting the wall with the closets dark(charcoal?) I want the rest of the walls light. We have been painting all of our trim white in the. rest of the house. Question: can I leave the trim around the closets oak and paint the rest white? (These are zilow photos, none of decor will be in my design)

Yes, you can leave this closet trim unpainted and do the rest white. Especially because if you live with it and decide you don't like it, then just go back a few months later and paint the trim white.

I personally am not a fan of accent wall colors. I think a dark color against that oak would look great. But having one wall a totally different color just looks to me like a committment phobia and you couldn't decide on the right color for the room. Do you have inspiration pics of rooms like this that you are basing your ideas off of?

Originally I saw the last photo and thought painting wall, trim, doors all same color. Then also thought if not painting doors then leave the trim oak also. I would like to take focus away from doors.

To clarify our contract: We have an *atypical* contract arrangement. It was a whole house water damage situation and many things were staying the same and many things were being upgraded. The contract was written in a way that we choose materials and pay as we go. The builder listed every item that was being worked on and estimated cost, labor separate and every item had to be approved by us before he began. Every item and finish we decided on was purchased by him as we approved it. We were given his receipts of all purchases (down to the nails!) on a monthly basis. When the time came for a finish decision, we had a meeting to choose materials and discuss cost. We would then give the go ahead and he would purchase the materials. When we were ready for floors, he called me down to choose size and material. He said the current floor upstairs (that did not get damaged) was red oak. I told him to go ahead and get the same for main floor, but to use a wider plank. His mistake in identifying the wood. We finished the whole house 2500 sq ft like this with no problems and excellent outcome, except for this floor mistake. I guess if you are saying it won't be noticeable since they are not visible at the same time, I will not pursue any further. I think we have a good arrangement with our builder and don't want to burn bridges as this is the last item on our project. And I feel a little better as you are both telling me the difference will not be noticeable. Let's see what happens next week. I've been putting off staining until I felt comfortable with the outcome. Thanks!

You certainly can. At least we did it! The deepest color in our oak floors is close to the color of the trim stain and kitchen cabinets. We love it. I'll see if I can come up with some photos for you later if that would help.

White trim sheen. Can I mix them?

I love to use color and sheen to group elements so they're easier to understand visually/consciously/unconsciously. I would choose to do doors/trim and bookshelves in satin and use the semi gloss to punctuate the mantel exclusively in a focal point kind of way. Because I think that's the way it should be organized. Also, the semi is probably (very probably) going to look different than the satin. Which will be helpful in punctuating the mantel but could look weird if the bookshelves don't match the trim.

Help! My flooring is a mix of red and white oak. How do I match that?

I see there have already been some pieces replaced in at least one area. Its possible, that someone patched those pieces in and used white oak. They appear to have taken the stain a lot darker than the rest of the floor. The rest of the floor looks to be red oak. I see at least 3 shorter boards that have been laced in as a replacement on the wall side. I would use red oak, for the rest of the floors, and since they will all need to be refinished to match, have them remove those 3 boards and put in matching oak there too, so you dont have those strips of very dark wood.

Yes, leave the trim wood. I was thinking white for the walls but then I saw your inspo pic with the light blue/gray and it looks really nice.

Are all of the wood window trims in the rest of the house painted yet? I ask because the look of unpainted wood window trim is coming back in style.

We have been painting all the trim white, this is one of the last rooms not painted. I think most wall colors look better against white trim. When I moved into a new home 25 years ago the white walls and wood trim was called "builder grade", not sure i can back again. Wood is definitely easier to maintain, though. I did want to brighten the room with lighter paint on the other walls, but maybe the wrong choice if that is out of style. I really want to add a window where the bureau is to let light in. My view would be looking at woods with a stream and boulders. Husband is too cheap and fighting me on it.

Trim with color is also trending big time but white trim is still popular.

I just read your post again. You wanted to know if only some trim were painted...no, all the trim should be the same throughout the room. You don't need to draw attention to a wall of closet doors anyway.
