About me: After living Overseas for the past 15 years, mostly in East Asia, we have repatriated to America where I am in the process of developing a Japanese garden. Having made an informal study of many Asian gardens, particularly in Japan, China, and Korea, I am excited about blending a synthesis of elements into a modest garden that will reflect my experiences and recollections of the inimitable, classic beauty of those beloved lands.
As I assemble the elements of the garden, I'll be particularly interested in acquiring unique plants, especially brooms and weeping trees, so if you have soemthing unique that is zone 5 (or 6) hardy I'd love to hear from you, especially if you are willing to share its genetics.

My zone is: Keokuk, Iowa z5

Commented: Trees/shrubs with open/interesting branching for zone 5? Acer campestra fits your description. For additional interest, try the cultivar 'Carnival' which should perform well on the shaded side of your house. Charley
