Dining room or nook
7. Modern Farmhouse Charm in Tennessee A rustic farm table with wide wood planks is the heart of this Nashville dining room. Stylish black chairs and a simple black lantern complete the charmingly spartan space, while built-ins provide room for serving, storage and decorative items. Notice plank size
Err on the side of too big. A dining room rug should have at least 24 inches of extra room on all sides of the dining table to allow enough space for guests to pull out chairs without tripping over the rug. An even wider border is ideal. To be sure you are getting the correct size rug, measure your dining table, add 24 inches or more on each side and mark the area directly on the floor with painter’s tape. If the marked areas falls well inside your other dining room furniture (buffet, bar cart), consider sizing up.

The dresser in the dining room houses all of the owners’ best glasses and crockery,” Ashwin says. “The center section is reserved for drinks. It’s mirror-backed with lights inside and has a pullout shelf for making drinks and cocktails.” The drawers and cabinet underneath provide plenty of room for napkins and tableware
After. This allowed for a cozy new nook that feels connected to the kitchen. The new deep cased opening between it and the dining room allowed for the recessed display shelves on the right. The table is from Ikea, the bench cushions are easy-to-wipe faux leather and the ceiling light matches the one over the island.
FYI onkitchen counter The honed granite countertops have the look and feel of soapstone but are more durable, adding to the functionality of the room. Handmade clay tiles with a crackle finish bring another layer of texture. Custom cabinets: Taylor Made Cabinets; granite in Jet Mist; sink: 36-inch Whitehaus fireclay series; faucet: Brizo Artesso pull-down
Spacing While we often want to fit the largest dining table possible into our spaces to allow for better entertaining, ultimately if your table takes up so much room that your family or your guests can’t easily get to and from their seat, nobody will have a good time. The best-case scenario is to have 42 to 48 inches of space all the way around the table. But since at least one side of the table is usually also a passageway into and out of the room, you should ideally have 60 inches of space or more on that side. This will greatly reduce the chance of collisions when one person attempts to walk by while another happens to pull out a chair.
Ceiling and lights Covenant LLC SaveEmail In the dining area, new windows bring in ample daylight during the day, but an alternative to insufficient light fixtures was required at night. Before stuffing the ceiling with new recessed lights, though, Crestin and her clients took a beat and asked how much light they really needed, where and for what purposes. “People are tempted to overlight spaces just because they worry they might one day want a light there,” Crestin says. Instead, they took a more mindful approach, adding sconces over the windows to light the countertop zone, pendants over the island and a long fixture composed of multiple Edison bulbs above the dining table. They totaled up the wattage to make sure the lighting would be adequate and were rewarded with a honeyed “glow” at night. The designer, who lives in the neighborhood, smiles to herself whenever she drives by and sees the room lit up.
I had a glass pendant light over my kitchen sink - similar to the one in the photo of the "breakfast nook". After cleaning my whole house for days getting ready for company, a family member commented to me about the dust on that light fixture. I told her the fella coming was over 6 feet tall and I was saving it for him. Meanwhile, I was pissed that after days of working to clean/straighten my home she had to point out one thing missed. I never wanted to hear it again. I replaced it. Just a thought for others who are unlikely to do a weekly dusting/cleaning of you glass pendents: go with something other than clear glass...
