Chic & Functional Home Offices
The modern work environment is seeing more and more people working from home, and with that a new appreciation about just what a home office can look like.
There is often limited space and the luxury of dedicating a room to the sole purpose of functioning as an office is not an option. As a result many homeowners and designers are showing great creativity in seeking out usable space to set up shop. Both functional and inspirational, here are some of my favorite home offices seen on Houzz.

If I had to pick one office from this collection I do think this would be the one. The craftsmanship is impeccable, the finishes classic with a gray door adding style. The space is compact but every inch is utilized by running cabinetry around the walls up to the ceiling. There is a view to enjoy from the chair and a door to close off the noise from the other areas of the home. How do I order up one of these?
Everything in this space clearly states it belongs to one very chic individual. The tall door with paned glass, unique yellow chair and lamp, art wall and candelabra. What does this person do? Most certainly something creative.
Long and wide hallways can eat up a lot of the square footage in a home. If space for an office is limited, placing a smart looking and functional work area along a hall can be a creative solution. Here it appears this was the plan from the start, look at the low placement of the windows directly behind the work surface.
The same concept of using space along a hall can be used at the top of a stair landing. Here this approach is taken to the extreme, placing a work surface, chair and shelving in a tight space that many people might not recognize as having this potential.
Whether this office nook is actually located in a kitchen or a hall, it could certainly be part of a beautiful kitchen design. Office nooks incorporated within a kitchen can become great spots to keep up with tasks while not being removed from the room that has become the true center of many homes.
Turning closets into office spaces has become a wildly popular trend, and why not. If a home lacks another space to fit in a work area, this could be the solution. And the benefit? When work is done close down shop by closing the doors.
Here a work area is set up along a far wall in a small space, where perhaps a chair would have been placed instead, angled towards the sofa. I suspect this office gets more use than a chair would have. The track lighting, installed hovering above the work area, ensures proper task lighting.
Now any office where I see beautiful fabrics hung, a dress form and a fabulous lamp will get my attention. The space has a casual chicness to it, and the decision to separate the area from the adjoining space by hanging tall drapery panels provides a wonderful backdrop.
Isn't it nice to think of being able to look out a window to a beautiful scene while working? Here shelving cubes on the wall provide accessible storage as does the cabinet below. The walls are covered with inspirational objects and I'm intrigued with the light fixture, which appears to be hung off-center in the room...I like that.
Here is another chic and feminine home office with pale blue walls and a beautiful wallpaper lining the wall behind the glass shelves. I think my favorite element of this space is the quite tall brass lamp with its finish that relates back to the wallpaper colors.
What I appreciate most about this home office is the use of a light fixture that would more likely be seen in a dining room. Imagine this design without it...not quite the same, is it?
This home office would come in as a close second if I had to choose from the offices in this Ideabook. The calm of this space can almost be felt through the photo. The large windows showcase a quiet view. The bookcases running up to the ceiling are filled with beautiful items and there is a built-in bench placed along the wall behind the desk. So whether sitting at the desk or lounging on the bench, I imagine this would be a perfect spot to collect your thoughts and be very productive.
I recently included this home office in another Ideabook on Message Boards, as I loved how the turquoise corkboard frame mirrors the color of the cabinetry. What a cozy spot, with delightful colors, function and a wonderful view as a bonus.
Finally, here is a built-in version of a secretary desk. How functional is this? I don't know about sitting too long on a wooden cube, but what a great use of space that also provides an incredible amount of storage.
