Mom and Dad's Kitchen Ideabook
Hey Mom and Dad! I created this ideabook to show you inspiration photos and keep track of functional ideas for your new kitchen. I’ve shared it with you so that you can add Houzz photos of other kitchens you like and add notes. Once you hire a designer we can share it with them — it’s a really good way for them to get a sense of your personal style and keep track of your must-haves and wish list.

This is the tile you liked in Charmean’s kitchen story. It’s handpainted terra-cotta and you can chose the colors in it.

Cabinets. The new trend is cabinets is this type that has slab fronts that are flush — it’s called inset. I also like the way the sink sticks out a little bit here with the feet on the bottom. It breaks things up and is a nice alternative to the apron-front sinks you’re tired of.
Also, check out how the molding goes all the way up to the ceiling, so there isn’t that weird space between the upper cabinets and the ceiling. You have this now and it’s great. I don’t, and it gets gross and dusty and full of dead bugs and it’s impossible to get up there to clean it.

Under sink cabinets/farm sink. A cute way to do the cabinets under the apron-front sink. Go for a Rohl’s Shaw’s Original Fireclay sink if you do decide to use a farmhouse sink.
Dishwasher. Also, that’s a dishwasher concealed by a matching panel-front on the left. I think you should do this but use a 2-drawer dishwasher from Fisher Paykel. It’s more ergonomic — easier to load and unload the top drawer. Wicki has one and it’s great.

Panel front dishwasher. See that bin pull to the right of the sink? That’s the dishwasher with a panel front that conceals it.
Cabinet details. Also, I really like these cabinets on feet. It gives it more of a “furniture look” that looks historic.

Pretty wallpaper.

Really pretty tile
Here’s a closer look at it. This one by Walker-Zanger is getting really popular, the terra-cotta one from Tabarka is less ubiquitous.

Custom-colored range. This is a BlueStar range. They can make it in 700+ colors, so you could have it match a blue plucked from your tile.
I just love this kitchen, here is the whole story:

Just for fun, this colorful La Cornue range costs more than a luxury car. Dream on.
Pendant light. Cool light for over the sink from Schoolhouse Electric.
This is just a really cute kitchen. Very much your style and designed to fit into a historic home.
Light. Love this fixture!
Glass cabinet fronts. I’m not sure on this one but it could be nice to have a cabinet or two with glass doors. You can do seeded glass so that it won’t look messy. Anyway, I’d do them on either side of the window over the sink. The only issue here is keeping the insides looking presentable, but it’s a good chance to display things you love like your tulip pitcher and glasses, and more blue stuff.
I actually really like the glass doors with the panes. The issue is, you want to line the shelves up with them so you need to make sure what you store in there fits that height. I have a pet peeve about the panes not lining up with the shelves.
Freestanding china cabinet. Love this freestanding piece. If you get rid of your kitchen desk, you could have something like this on that wall and it could serve as a coffee station or something like that.
Here is the same kitchen from another angle. This style would fit in well with your house.
Desk wall alternative for the barn wood wall.
Latches. Love this style hardware — the latches on the lower cabinet.
Charging drawer. Dedicated spots for charging are major. They can build USB ports right into your outlets, but also think about where you want your devices to be. It’s nice to have a shelf or drawer where you can tuck them instead of having all the wires and devices out on the counter/kitchen table.
A charging station inside a cabinet. Clark likes this better than the outlet inside of a drawer.
Hardware. I like this oil rubbed bronze hardware but I also like antique brass for your kitchen.

You know, you are also a PEWTER person. I think pewter hardware could be really neat. Then maybe you could display a little of Mimi & Pop’s pewter in the kitchen?

Hardware. Traditional and simple.
Microwave drawer.
I like this so much better than having to look at a microwave over a range. You could install a pretty range hood instead. And it’s more ergonomic. I would put it next to the fridge so that it’s tucked away.

If you install a microwave drawer instead of an over-the-range one you can install a pretty vent hood.
Red Stove. I just threw this in here because I love red. I think the china cabinet piece should be a color like this, could be really fun. Not red red but a little darker like this.
Freezer drawers. Drawer for pints of Brigham’s! How cool is this? You don’t have room for it but it’s awesome. I also really like this vent hood.
Drawers not doors on lower cabinets.
So one thing to remember is that deep drawers are a great option for pots and pans, mixing bowls, Corningware, et. al. It’s easier to access them than in your typical lower cabinets with drawers as you “age in place” ;) There are also cool inserts for the corner cabinet that work better than a Lazy Susan — you can pull them out for easier access.
