These spaces enjoy roomy layouts, elegant finishes and picturesque views
2. Modern
Designer: Claire Paquin of Clean Design
Location: Westbrook, Connecticut
Size: 171 square feet (15.8 square meters); 19 by 9 feet (5.7 by 2.7 meters)
Homeowners’ request: A master suite retreat in a new-build home along the Connecticut coastline.
Dream features: Jetted spa tub with an ocean view. Asian statuary marble in herringbone pattern on the floor and 12-by-24-inch tiles on the walls. Two vanities. Oval window framing the Long Island Sound. Black window sashes. Gray wall and ceiling paint (Shoreline by Benjamin Moore).
Designer secret: “One very important decision we made in the entire house was to paint the sashes of the windows black,” designer Claire Paquin says. “The human eye sees more clearly through black than any other color. As a result, the water view is more easily seen and experienced in the entire house because of this design decision.”

“Uh-oh” moment: “The biggest challenge actually resulted from the oval window,” Paquin says. “The master bathroom has incredible views, and initially we had windows across the entire south elevation in order to capitalize on these views. The issue, however, was that this resulted in no room for the vanities, medicine cabinets and vanity lighting. We decided instead to incorporate an asymmetrical window detail on the exterior of the home by using the oval window instead of a bank of windows, which would have been symmetrical with the other half of the south elevation.
“In the end, the whimsical window works on both the interior and the exterior. Once we decided on the oval window, we designed the vanities to be his-and-hers instead of one long vanity. While this decision sacrificed a bit of storage, in the end, being able to walk right up to the window and see the water view and lawn below is more dramatic.”
Medicine cabinets: Restoration Hardware; vanities: custom, designed by Clean Design, built by Henry Agudelo Architectural Woodworking; artwork: Eileen R. Miller and Belos; vanity lights: Union Filament milk glass narrow tall sconce, Restoration Hardware; chandelier: Bulle, Nuevo Living; flush-mount light: Newhouse Block ceiling light with white glass, Visual Comfort; tub: Essencia, BainUltra; tub filler: Waterdecor; shower fittings and faucets: Basic collection with lever handles, Phylrich; tub tray: Valsan; shower enclosure: Premier Shower Door; flowers: NDI; tile: Asian statuary marble, Quality Tile; vanity hardware: finger pulls, Berenson

“Uh-oh” moment: “The biggest challenge was the space planning,” designer Mark C. Morris says. “Because this is a newly constructed home, we went through several iterations of the arrangement of the room and which area would have the ocean view. First the tub, but it wouldn’t be used as often. Then the shower, but the neighbors might be able to see in. And then it was decided that the vanities would have the view, as [that area] is predominantly the most used on a daily basis.”
Countertop: Super White quartz, EuroStone; floor tile: porcelain, 12 by 24 inches; vanities: wood veneer and rift-cut white oak; windows: Fleetwood Windows & Doors
