Kitchen of the Week: Vintage Details and Fabulous Seating
A classic black-and-white palette with steely accents brings modern-day style to a lounge-worthy kitchen
The original kitchen was demolished, and an addition of 400 square feet was constructed to make the new kitchen feel more central and integrated into the living spaces.
Brass-and-black pendant lights, plus decorative floor tile, contribute to the vintage vibe.
“The idea of a kitchen that would work just as well at a cocktail party as it does on a Sunday morning really dominated this project,” says designer Maria von Hartz. “We really were able to make it a glamorous space.”

Kitchen bling: “The Lacanche glitters like a jewel in the space,” von Hartz says of the range, which, in addition to being a top-of-the-line appliance, lends sophistication and classic appeal to the space. Marble counters and white subway tiles were also chosen for their classic look.

Custom metal shelves by Graham Osborne of Osborne Building Corporation flank the cooking area. A brass pot filler punctuates the rows of crisp white tile.

Island living: A set of bar stools, provided by the client, lines a sleek black-painted wood island. A television hangs discreetly on a nearby wall.

Outside in: “We had to figure out how to make the transition from the inside to outside spaces feel seamless and original to the house,” Osborne says.
The entire back wall to the pool was opened up, and the design team matched French doors that are in other areas of the home, which helped the new addition seem original to the house.

Lounge life: Although the clients did not need a kitchen table, the design team suggested they build out a space anyway that could fit a table, should one be required in the future.
Instead of dining furniture, the designers filled the area with lounge pieces. Now the homeowners enjoy hanging out and reading the news here.

Pet project: A chic little cutout allows the laundry room door to stay closed while offering Mavis the cat access to the litter box hidden inside one of the laundry room cabinets.
History repeated: A chandelier, original to the house, peeks through from the dining room. The design team used antiqued glass on the mini bar, adding to the historical feel of the space.

Who lives here: A couple and their cat, Mavis
Location: Los Angeles
Size: 400 square feet (37 square meters)
Designers: Annie Fitzgerald and Maria von Hartz of Von Fitz Design
The backstory: “The original kitchen was a quaint space, designed as most 1940s kitchens were — hidden in the back part of the home with no real access to the gorgeous backyard and no flow with the rest of the home,” says designer Annie Fitzgerald. “Our clients wanted the kitchen to be the heart of their home in a super-sophisticated way.”
