6 Ways to Make the Most of This Weekend
Take care of a task or two — then pause and savor the change of seasons
With the autumn equinox coming up Friday, Sept. 22, change is certainly in the air. The daylight hours are getting shorter, the weather brisker and the light more golden. Use this weekend as a much-needed pause from your busy daily schedule to rest, refresh and get a few tasks checked off your list so you can head into the new week ahead of the game.
3. Simplify one cupboard or drawer. Kitchen cupboards and drawers overflowing? Decluttering the entire kitchen in one go can feel overwhelming. Instead, focus your efforts on one cupboard or drawer at a time. For your first one, choose a spot you access daily: the cupboard where you store your everyday dishes, for example. Remove items you rarely (if ever) use, and donate them to charity.
4. Test-drive the guest room. Scrambling for sheets that are the right size, spare pillows and a lamp that works when your guest is due to arrive any minute is a recipe for stress. Instead of waiting until then, take a moment this weekend to give your guest room a once-over, tracking down overnight essentials and making note of anything you are missing. If you’re so inclined, consider actually sleeping in your guest bed overnight — there’s no better way to figure out what’s needed than experiencing it yourself.

5. Take stock of your garden. Whether your garden includes multiple raised beds or just a few pots of herbs, the cusp of a new season is a great time to take stock of what has been going well and what you want to plant moving forward, from cool-weather edibles to potted flowers for the porch.

6. Transition your porch from summer to fall. Savoring the shift in season from the comfort of your porch makes for a lovely way to pass a weekend afternoon. Take a little time this weekend to sweep away the cobwebs, set out a pot of fall flowers or a cluster of gourds, and drape a cozy throw over your favorite seat — and then sit down and enjoy some well-deserved downtime!
