A Designer’s New Kitchen Embraces Soothing Sea-Blue Colors
Ocean-inspired fish-scale tile and brass hardware on crisp white cabinets create a tranquil space
Backsplash: To really bring in the sea, Michelle commissioned a fish-scale tile design from Mercury Mosaics. “I wanted the space to be about the backsplash,” she says. “It’s the star — and pretty rad.”

After: Looking in the same direction as the previous photo, this image shows new cabinetry surrounding the window.
Michelle kept the range in the same spot, but rather than going stainless, the couple opted for white appliances to blend in with the cabinets.
For the countertops, they chose White Fantasy granite for a “marble look,” Michelle says. The floor is local slate.

Wall paint: “I love the trending look of navy bottom cabinets, but I wanted a look that I’d love a little longer, so I used a blue shade on the walls,” Michelle says. “I wanted it to be a bit brighter than navy, as I love bold, bright colors.”

Dining for two: Alex created a table for two against a wall without cabinets, and above it, Michelle hung a gallery of collected sea paintings and a vintage oar. This has become one of the couple’s favorite places in the house. “It’s a sweet space we’ll treasure for years to come,” Michelle says.

Who lives here: Designer Michelle Gage and her husband, Alex, an engineer
Location: Havertown, Pennsylvania
Size: 215 square feet (20 square meters)
The backstory: Fans of the sea, Michelle and Alex Gage set out to gather ocean-inspired materials and colors to overhaul their kitchen, which they demolished themselves. “Where we saved on labor, we spent on materials,” Michelle says.
Working with the same layout, they added an entire wall of cabinets, doubling their storage. Though ocean blues were the starting point, they decided to keep the cabinets white for a classic look and then layer in accent colors. Brushed brass hardware adds a bit of warm glam.
