It's interesting how each generation must navigate the rules on new technology ... Dad bought his first TV in 1955 and that was it the radio gathered dust ... but Mum said not at the dining table ... so I hope we can emulate that.

My folks were (still are) great conversationalists. There were nine of us at the dinner table and everyone talked about pretty much anything and everything. My dad eventually introduced a word game called Ink Pink. Both of those words have one syllable so one person would say two rhyming words of only one syllable each and the words were a clue to what the answer was. The right answer had to be two words of one syllable each. The winner then got to present their own two-word clues, and on it went. We also expanded the game to Inky Pinky (two two-syllable rhyming words) or Inkity Pinkity (three three-syllable rhyming words). It was fun and kind of a learning experience, and we really competed to match wits with one another.

Great tips. I would add one more: make dinner an event. Set a nice tablecloth, dinner napkins, bring out the silverware and wine glasses. Light up candlesand dim the lights. Even if you are having leftovers... My kids loved it and learned how to behave at the dinner table and practiced the art of dinner conversation. When they were bored, my husband played this game with them where you cannot pronounce the words 'yes' or 'no'. The girls would stay engaged in the conversation longer because they were trying to win the game.
