Surprising Seating
There's nothing more basic to a home than a place to sit. A chair. The simple presence fo a seat can make a room comfortable and welcoming - it invites you in and asks you to stay a while.
When it comes to decor, chairs can play a lot of roles, too. The perfect chair for a room is often one that you'd least expect - something truly surprising in terms of size or shape.
Every room can benefit from a little bit of surprise in the seating area. These are some of my favorites:

I'm a big fan of mixing seating at the dining room table - and this is a great example of what happens when that works. I love the shape of the patterned chair and think it's genius the way the lucite legs work with the Philippe Starck Louis chairs. The overall effect is clean but eclectic and very cool.
This is another great example of mixing chairs at the dining room table. The head is a perfect spot for a chair that could easily be at home in a formal living room. Playing the patterned chair off white side chairs keeps the overall look from overwhelming.
This sofa could easily venture over into country kitsch territory - but it's saved by the cool chair. The overall look is comfortable and homey, but stylish.
OK, so this chair's not that surprising - but it is fantastic. I just couldn't resist including it. I love the colors. Wouldn't it be great in an otherwise modern living room? Or as a dining room chair?
Kids deserve great style, too. These Eames molded chairs are absolutely perfect for kids' rooms. They come in all sorts of bright colors - I love how all the red works together here.
So maybe a picnic table in the garden isn't exactly surprising...but in this garden, I think it creates a great casual entertaining space. A more formal table and chairs would set off a whole different vibe. Plus, I love picnic benches - there's nothing better than squeezing in around the table for a fun summer meal.
Seating in the bedroom is great - it can turn a typically private room into a space that's inviting for friends and family. Often, bedroom chairs are of the overstuffed variety - just another take on beds. That's why I love these simple, streamlined seats. They're comfortable, but don't scream "sleep in me!"
