Behold the Ultimate Beverly Hills Bachelor Pad
A vintage leather sofa, terrazzo floors and an open layout help create a swanky living room
Functionally, the living room was conceived as a multipurpose space, equally suited to formal entertaining and watching a basketball game alone. The space features dark wood paneling and a huge chiseled-stone fireplace, which Hollenbeck balanced with a pair of playful metal and sheepskin accent chairs from high-end Italian furniture line Baxter. Comfortable and low-slung, the chairs’ design walks the line between vintage and contemporary. The mixed metal coffee tables are also from Baxter.
The open floor plan reduced the amount of usable wall space, and the few available walls were mostly built out with bookcases and storage. Hollenbeck decided that a floating seating arrangement would allow the most intuitive flow for foot traffic. A curved sofa was a no-brainer; anything angular would have been too hard, a “pinch point” into one of the circulation paths, the designer says.
A wall of sliding glass doors on three separate tracks allows easy access to the home’s backyard, which features an outdoor bar, seating area and sparkling pool.

For the project, Hollenbeck commissioned several pieces from well-known Los Angeles street artist Victor Reyes. One such piece can be seen on the hallway wall beyond the bookcases. Another can be seen on the wall near the grand piano.
The homeowner loves circular forms, which is evident in the architecture as well as the decor. Two oculus skylights, one above the leather sofa and another above the grand piano, complement the curved furnishings. Also, note the circular planter cut into the terrazzo floor.

Living Room at a Glance
Who lives here: A single man in his 40s
Location: Beverly Hills, California
Designer: Holly Hollenbeck of HSH Interiors
The iconic 1970s De Sede Non Stop leather sofa sets the tone for the rest of this open-plan living room in Beverly Hills, California. Designer Holly Hollenbeck created a mood board for the living room that merged swanky retro touches with the home’s contemporary, high-tech design. Even the terrazzo floors recall the 1960s and ’70s. A round silk shag rug grounds the living room as its own space, distinct from the adjacent bar area.
