The appearance of your leaves simply suggests they're in the process of being shed. When a tree goes dry, a hormone (auxin) that must flow through the abscission zone to keep an abscission layer from forming stops flowing. The abscission zone is at the base of the leaf petiole where it attaches to the trunk. Once the abscission layer starts to form, it's irreversible and the leaf is destined to separate from the plant. This is usually a very quick process when trees go dry, so usually leaves are still green when they fall. The yellow leaf color indicates that the plant has broken down its store of chlorophyll and mobilized its (chlorophyll's) Mg component for use in other plant parts. What this means is the process of shedding the leaves has been ongoing long enough for the plant to repurpose leaf nutrients and other bio-compounds, making it less likely the lack of green pigment in the leaves was caused by going dry, and more likely it's a light issue.
