Tips for Designing a Loft
Becky's recent ideabook "Lofty Elements" got me thinking about all the design challenges that lofts present. I'm working on a few lofts in San Francisco right now -- and while the spaces are amazing, homeowners often have a hard time figuring out how to live in them.
The most common questions/dilemmas I encounter are:
1. How do we break up the space and define areas for each activity?
2. What size art pieces should we put on the walls, if any?
3. The space feels empty -- should we keep adding furniture pieces?
Here are some tips for designing livable and stylish lofts.

Here are some tips for designing livable and stylish lofts.
Draw attention to your high ceilings. Large prints on the wall draw the eye up.
Keep it simple. Too much clutter and too many pieces of furniture will make a loft look less like a chic living space and more like a shipping warehouse. This space is just right!
Use dramatic light fixtures to define spaces. This oversized pendant fits the scale of the room.
Create comfortable conversation groups. This one highlights the fireplace.
Use pops of the same color throughout the space to create a unified look. The orangey-red works well with dark wood and light upholstery.
Use light fixtures to play with scale. This arc lamp is a functional sculpture.
