Homeowners who like to collect wine are creating beautiful spaces in which to store it, display it and, best of all, taste it. Whether inspired by an old cellar in Italy, a favorite Sonoma vineyard’s tasting room or a contemporary restaurant in Manhattan, wine storage design has come a long way in the last few years. Here are some of the most popular wine cellar photos uploaded to Houzz from January to March of this year, as measured by the number of people who have saved them to their Houzz ideabooks. They reveal some compelling trends in luxurious wine room design.
1. Vary the Storage Options
Storing bottles with the labels facing out is a relatively new storage option and makes it much easier to find the bottle you’re looking for. Meanwhile, a mix of shelves sized for wine crates and a dynamic crisscross wall provide contrast on the adjacent wall.

This room utilizes the tasting island for additional storage. But the floor-to-ceiling wine Lazy Susan is the standout in here.
2. Make Room for Tasting
Many wine cellar owners are taking a page from the vineyards they visit and providing a spot for tastings in the wine cellar. This live-edge waterfall wood countertop plays off the oak of wine barrels and corks. Also worth noting here is the variety of built-in shelves and the highlighted displays.

An intimate table for four is all the tasting room this wine cellar needs.
3. Get Inspired by Wine Country Style
Many oenophiles are gleaning inspiration from the architecture you’d see along the Chianti road in Tuscany or the Alsace Wine Route in France. Large stacked stones, brick floors and ceilings, and iron chandeliers are some of the elements that can bring this look. But who is that man on the fountain? Bacchus?

Brick barrel vault ceilings are another old-world element you’d find in old vineyards and restaurants in Tuscany. They became common during the Roman Empire.
4. Put Your Wine on Full Display

5. Make a Statement with a Backsplash
