3 Key Pieces: Behold This Boho Beauty
Designer Angela Ferlita Hugo discusses the 3 stars of this eclectic bedroom on New York’s Upper West Side
Most interior designers will tell you that every piece of furniture and stitch of fabric they select for a room is vital to its overall aesthetic, but there are still those few special pieces that make a space stand out. In this new series, we ask designers to choose the three most important pieces in a room they created. Here, designer Angela Ferlita Hugo shares the inspiration behind the standout pieces in this boho chic bedroom in New York City.
1. Sea Change
The piece: A framed color photograph titled Trident by Jessica Haye and Clark Hsiao.
The impact: In order to keep the small bedroom feeling light and airy, Ferlita Hugo opted for a bed without a headboard, letting the colorful photograph of a turbulent ocean create a focal point above the bed. “I love the bold color and the movement it creates in a small space,” she says.

2. Illuminated Thinking
The piece: Angler sconce from West Elm
The impact: With only enough space for small nightstands, the designer added wall sconces to keep more of the surface area clear on the nightstands. “The sconces are minimalist but very textural and interesting,” Ferlita Hugo says. “It is very form-follows-function.”

3. Pillow Power
The piece: A 12-by-48-inch lumbar pillow from Lulu & Georgia
The impact: The designer went with all white bedding, so she wanted to add something more playful and colorful to the bed. “The homeowners have a bohemian, global aesthetic, and I thought this pillow spoke to that,” Ferlita Hugo says.

Who lives here: A newlywed professional couple
Location: Upper West Side of Manhattan
Size: About 80 square feet (about 7.4 square meters)
Designer: Homepolish
Since the bedroom is only about 80 square feet and needed to fit a queen bed to comfortably accommodate both homeowners, Ferlita Hugo wanted to keep the decor minimal and light. “We created interest with a great piece of art, a statement boudoir pillow and interesting accents such as the pendant lights,” the designer says.
