These Spaces Have the Music in Them
See 10 rooms where people jam with friends, learn new instruments, display rock art, listen, compose and perform
There have been a lot of spaces designed around music at Houzz — for producing, recording, practicing, taking lessons, composing, jamming and listening. Items such as instruments, album collections, posters, photographs, books, vintage turntables and anything Beatles-related all have special places of honor in music lovers’ homes. Here’s a look at 10 spaces designed with music in mind.
2. Massive wall for a DJ’s albums. The Los Angeles neighborhood of Laurel Canyon has been popular with musicians since the 1960s, and the legacy continues today. Like in the home of interior designer Kristin Korven and musician/DJ Derek James, where a rolling library ladder is a necessity for reaching all the albums. James used to live here with his band, but now it’s home to the couple and their two children. Extensive shelves hold their vinyl collection and books within the open floor plan. Across the room there’s a 1969 Rock-Ola jukebox.
3. New built-ins for a string bass and albums. A client’s beloved string bass was the starting point for this project, which transformed an unused corner in a couple’s living room into a hardworking space. After finding the right spot for her client to hang the instrument, interior designer Harmony Weihs designed built-ins around and next to it that combine cabinets and shelves for books. Not seen in this photo is another shelf that was part of the project, custom designed to house an extensive album collection.

4. Rock ’n’ roll-inspired garage makeover. Interior designer Lindsay Pennington gave her husband, professional musician Tim Mosher, a proper man cave to call his own. They renovated their Laurel Canyon garage into his office-lounge, and she outfitted it with all of his favorite rock art and books. Notable pieces include a poster signed by members of The Who; a concert poster that includes the band Mosher played with in high school, the Very Nice Plants; an original Wes Lang piece; a Rod Stewart photograph; and an Alexander Calder print she and the couple’s sons gave Mosher for Father’s Day. Just to the left of the chrome étagère is a designated spot for Mosher’s guitars.

5. Album collector’s listening lounge. Interior designer Suzanne Manlove finished her family’s basement with her husband’s love of vinyl in mind. She designed the storage around his collection of albums, gave him his own designated listening chair and had him curate iconic albums from different musical genres for a gallery wall.

6. Room for a musical prodigy to learn new instruments. Interior designer Jen Talbot designed this room around a teen client’s love of music. The young musician likes to hang out here and teach herself new instruments, such as the vintage sitar she scored in India and the drums. The chair and pouf provide a comfortable spot to listen to music, and Talbot used some of the teen’s favorite albums as art around the room.

7. Classic rock-inspired teen bedroom. “We designed this room around a 14-year-old’s passion for cool music,” interior designer Ginger Curtis says. The teen loves to jam with his father, and the Beatles are among his favorites. Nods to his love for music include a chalkboard wall complete with musical staffs he can compose songs on, a Union Jack quilt inspired by The Who, picture rails for displaying albums, sound waves from two Beatles songs turned into art and designated spaces for his guitars, headphones, microphone and turntable.

8. Room for teenage jam sessions. Interior designer Paula Biondi gave these lucky kids a design that’s more slick than the typical garage band setting. When designing the basement of the family’s home, she designated this space for the couple’s musician son and his friends to play together. She snagged the Abbey Road poster from his bedroom and added some Bertoia chairs that have a rock ’n’ roll look to them.

9. Instruments and vintage equipment in a harmonious, eclectic space. In the home musician Mark Pickerel shares with his family, you’ll run into all kinds of interesting musical items, even a didgeridoo, seen here. Vintage record players, radios and speakers add to the eclectic style, and many things have two functions. Gongs and cymbals double as accents, and vintage suitcases used to tote merch double as side tables.

10. Space to produce music in Melbourne, Australia. Musician Matt Walters uses the home he shares with partner Liz Hamer as a home office for his music-related business, Parlour Gigs, and produces his own music. This space is where he runs the business and makes music, but a musical theme runs through the house. Items such as an old reel-to-reel tape recorder have become sculpture.
