The Hardworking Laundry Room: A Place for Brooms and Mops
See 8 smart solutions for stashing long-handled cleaning tools
Brooms and mops can be tough to store neatly and efficiently. Confession: My own usually wind up crammed next to my refrigerator, with everything falling down when I grab for one. They don’t fare much better leaning up against a wall in the downstairs closet, toppling down whenever I need to get a coat. But the laundry room can be a great place to neatly stash your mops and brooms. It doesn’t take much room to give them a good designated spot with the right cabinet, hooks or grippers.
1. Use the back of the cabinet door. By making these shelves shallower than the depth of the cabinet, there is room to hang brooms and mops and even install shelves for cleaning supplies on the inside of the door.
2. Think thin. The slimmest of cabinets can usually fit your long-handled cleaning tools, and this one tucks in right next to the stackable washer and dryer.
This solution places the slim cabinets between a side-by-side washer and dryer.
3. Employ pullouts. A pullout provides an elegant solution and easy access to whatever is stored in the back of the deep cabinet.
Here’s another take on the same idea: Brooms and mops hang from hooks along a pullout rack.

4. Use a thick wall strategy. This back hallway serves as the laundry area — the washer and dryer are located behind the closed cabinet doors. The designer made the most of a thick wall strategy — the wall that separates the hall from a staircase had enough room for a shallow cabinet for brooms and other cleaning supplies.
6. Get a gripper. Hardworking grippers are a good way to keep brooms and mops organized within a tall cabinet. It keeps the bottom of the cabinet clear and helps you avoid that jumbling that makes them all tumble out when you reach for one of them.
7. Use the end of a cabinet row. A view of the end of a row of cabinets is not very exciting. So this slim cabinet that faces out into the rest of the space is a great idea.
8. Divide and conquer. Dividers provide designated spaces for the ironing board and the brooms and mops in this tall cabinet.
