The ceiling boards are Douglas Fir. Both were painted with a very thin layer of primer to give it the pickling look.
Any white primer will do. You just need to play with it to obtain the look you want
We used 50% primer and 50% water, but you may like a different combination

The wood was purchased by the builder - if I had to guess I would say it was most likely Hayward Lumber - the boards are 1 x4's - this is actually T + G flooring used on the ceiling. As to the grade -- I would have just noted VGDF - vertical grain doug fir.
