Guest Picks: 20 Terrific Underbench Storage Solutions
Use these crates, bins and baskets to keep mudrooms and entryways tidy — and keep everything you need close at hand
A couple of months ago I brought up the subject of shoes versus no shoes in the house. I loved reading everyone's opinion on the subject and found the contrast between different parts of the world extremely interesting. This month I am working with a family who has three children. They prefer that the children remove their shoes, coats, hats, etc. at the door. They have told me that otherwise those things get strewn all over the house. We decided to build out their mudroom to give each child a place to sit down. Each child will also have their own bin or basket under the bench where they will be expected to throw their mittens, hats and shoes. So this month, I have spent some time looking at different storage containers that fit under benches. Here are some of my favorites. — Stephanie from SabbeSpot
Itso Full-Size Fabric Bin, Green
The bold color is what attracted me to this, as well as its size. It is basically as large as you can go while maintaining the ability to slide under a bench.
Charlotte Lined Wire Baskets
These come for a great price. I personally would remove the fabric liner or replace it with something more fun. Wire is also an extremely durable option.
Printed Canvas Storage Bins
I am loving these new bin patterns. Each child could have their own pattern, and as you can see from this photo, they all go so well together.
Locker Baskets
I love locker baskets, but finding a vintage set that actually matches can be a tough task. These are a great size.
Household Essentials Small Bin, Brown
These are nice because of the handles, and the dark color seems like it would wear well.
Knitted Storage Basket
These come in several colors. It would be fun if each child had their own color. I also think they are beautifully designed.
Threshold Vintage Milk Crate, Light
I have spent a great deal of time scouting vintage crates, and I recently discovered that Target has their own version. They are well priced too.
German Wine Crate
I think it wold be fun to add casters to these vintage crates, and maybe a fabric liner so that little things do not fall out.
Water Hyacinth Bins
Woven baskets can add a nice natural element to a space, and I always think they look so clean and tidy.
Jute Bins
This is the bin we actually ended up going with for my project. Handles, a dark color, roomy dimensions — sold!
Wire Storage Basket
This is probably not the best use of space for under a bench because it is a little small, but I love the irregularity of the wires.
Natural Carrie Basket Collection
I have this type of basket in my baby's nursery. The handles make them easy to drag around from room to room.
Square Wire Storage Baskets
These slightly weathered wire baskets add a kind of found-object vibe to the space.
Wire Storage Baskets With Handles, Antique Blue-Gray Finish
This one is by far my favorite. It looks like vintage luggage. So charming and well designed!
