Room of the Day: Soft Look for a City Loft’s Master Suite
An Atlanta-based designer warms up her industrial loft’s master suite with a fireplace, color and texture
“I’ve always wanted to live in a loft,” interior designer Minhnuyet Hardy says. “You can add a lot of things in design, but you can’t add natural character.” Luckily for Hardy, this textile-factory-turned-residential-loft in Atlanta has no shortage of character. Her goal for the master suite’s remodel was to add warmth, texture and softness without losing the room’s rugged industrial charm.
The master suite is accessed by an original spiral staircase. Hardy painted the elaborate railing gold to make it stand out and to add a little glam to the industrial space. The wall behind the console table is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Kendall Charcoal, the same color used for the walls in the master suite. “I always like for a few elements to repeat from one room to the next to make the entire home feel connected,” Hardy says.
At the foot of the platform bed designed by Hardy is an acrylic bench topped with a luxurious sheepskin dyed gray. The two large works of art on opposite walls were created by Atlanta artist Carolyn Carr.
The wood beams that wrap around two of the bedroom’s walls are original to the loft. Hardy added a pair of vintage-inspired reading lamps with extendable accordion arms. The maple floating nightstands are her own design.
Hardy took space from a former walk-in closet to create a larger master bathroom that could accommodate a double vanity, made of reclaimed wood with a soapstone top. The clear globe pendants are mounted on the frameless mirror.

The master suite is on the loft’s second floor. Its large, iron-framed windows face west and receive late-day sun. Hardy added discreet solar shades that can be lowered to help keep the space cool in the summer. For the winter months, she installed an electric fireplace with a glass ceramic surround that puts off heat and a cozy glow. Hardy custom-designed the sliding barn door that leads to the master bathroom. It’s made of reclaimed wood and has a custom gray-brown stain.
