Ever spend time digging through your kitchen utensils to find the right thing? Or wish your kitchen had a more styled look? In this episode of Houzz TV, watch as kitchen organizer Wiebke Liu, founder of Blisshaus in Oakland, California, shows how organizing your kitchen items by color or material can make finding everything easier and creates a nice visual effect in your kitchen.
Watch now: Instant Style for Your Kitchen Counter
Untangle the Utensils
Start the organizing process by pulling out your giant crock of utensils. (If you have them in a drawer, pull everything out and sort them on the counter.) Group together utensils that are the same color or are made from the same material.
Liu likes to keep her wooden utensils in one crock, and places her black and metal ones in another crock. “You could create a third crock for black utensils, but before you know it, your countertop will be filled with crocks of utensils of every material and color,” she says. “Black and metal are both cool colors that look good with each other.”
If you have mismatched items, consider culling them by donating extras and tossing broken ones.

Dividing the utensils will help you find them faster later, Liu says. The next time you need your stainless steel soup ladle, you can hone in on the crock or drawer that contains only stainless steel items, instead of sifting through everything.
“By using a giant crock, you’ll be tempted to accumulate lots and lots of utensils over time,” Liu says. “Using a smaller crock forces you to eliminate redundant and rarely used items.”
She recommends sticking to two or three crocks. Although you can use one large crock, the mix of color and materials adds extra visual noise to your kitchen and makes the search for what you need more difficult.
