In fashion designer Gretchen Jones’ double studio apartment in New York City, a windowless room off the main living area serves as her bedroom. To make the space work, she painted the walls a light gray and turned the end of the room into her daily closet, using the built-in closets for long-term storage.

While a studio apartment often means the living room and bedroom are in the same room, it doesn’t always mean they share the same footprint. For this compact studio in London, Black and Milk installed a bed that flips down from above the sofa.
“You just tuck the back cushions down the side, and then it’s ready,” interior designer Olga Alexeeva says. “It’s nice and high, just right for watching TV. You feel as if you’re in a boutique hotel!” The bed, sofa and shelves came in a set from Italy.

Graphic designer Chris Nguyen ingeniously solved this problem by hanging a room divider that also doubles as a projector screen between his bed and the rest of the living area in his midcentury modern-loving studio.
