Houzz Tour: Rooftop Garden and Fun Living Spaces for 5
Contemporary and classic designs blend in family's seaside California home
This house is built in a very urban style, but it's actually located in the seaside neighborhood of Silver Strand in Marina Del Rey, Calif. The houses in this part of town are extremely close to each other, so builders are often forced to build up rather than out.
The owners of this home needed a space that would have lasting style and grow with their three kids. Designer Joani Stewart-Georgi infused the house with a transitional look that blends contemporary and classic design, and took advantage of the home's height with a gorgeous rooftop deck and view of the sea.

A complete outdoor kitchen was installed next to the fireplace. Since the weather in this area is ideal for outdoor entertaining almost all of the year, the clients wanted a space where they could host parties and make the most of their outdoor space.
The rooftop is divided into two areas, with an indoor lounge in-between. Stewart-Georgi is working on turning the other half of the rooftop deck into an outdoor play area for the kids.
A recreation room, guest room and bathroom and laundry room fill the bottom floor. This multipurpose room was outfitted with a pool table and sliding Nana doors that open up to a private patio with another outdoor kitchen.

This was a space the husband really wanted to be his — and having a place to store and celebrate his love of wine was a huge part of that. A cherry wood bar with stainless steel inserts was built against the back wall, along with an impressive wine storage system tucked behind two glass doors.
The third floor houses all of the bedrooms. The incredible wall mural in this nautical themed nursery was hand painted by Sedi Pak from Sedi Studios, who also designed the mural in the girls' room (next).
The clients wanted a bed in the nursery as a place to rest and relax while taking care of the baby. The room was just a bit too small for a good daybed, so Stewart-Georgi compromised by finding a chair that folds out into a bed. The big floor pillow was custom made so their son could play on the floor comfortably.

For the girls' room, Stewart-Georgi had to be careful to balance out the limited space for the two children. Two small wardrobes take the place of closets, and a a built-in bookcase was added for additional storage. Everything was designed to be within the girls' reach.

The playful contrast of pink and brown was inspired by a photo Stewart-Georgi came across in a magazine. She found perfect pink and white polka dot fabric, and had it made into duvets with little brown pom-pons on top. The beds were custom made in a plush brown fabric with contrasting pink piping.
The two children's rooms are at one end of the floor, while the master suite is at the end of a long hallway on the other side. The master bedroom was designed to be a place of ultimate comfort and relaxation. Soothing sage greens and soft off-whites were chosen for the color scheme, and Stewart-Georgi set up a small seating area near the foot of the bed for the couple to relax at the end of a long day.

The master bathroom's long and narrow design made it perfect for a large his-and-her vanity. Travertine floors and Caesarstone counters complete the luxe look.
The kitchen in this new spec home was done in a very traditional style when the couple moved in. They wanted to redo it, but didn't want to go too contemporary or trendy. Stewart-Georgi had the surfaces refaced and new alder cabinetry and Caesarstone counters installed. The pantry was outfitted for ultimate organization, and a built-in desk was added next to the refrigerator.

Stewart-Georgi created a transitional look throughout the home's interior, relying on custom and classic investment pieces.
The living room plays off black-and-white tones, but the mix of textures help keep the space warm and comforting. A glossy travertine floor reflects the abundance of natural sunlight. The fireplace surround is made of concrete painted with a faux finish for an antique look.

The living room is a long and narrow space, so Stewart-Georgi broke it up into multiple seating areas, contrasting the black Barcelona chairs with a white set of contemporary armchairs and a sofa. The second floor of this house contains all of the home's main common spaces, including the kitchen, dining room, living room, and family room.

Stewart-Georgi loves contemporary art. Both the painting and the mirror in this dining room were designed by friends of hers — the gorgeous mirror is made of stainless steel tubes welded together to look like bamboo.

Although this neighborhood was once close to the water, the construction of canals have placed it farther back from the beach, making that rooftop deck all the more important.
