My Atkins Diet Garden Plan
This year I am planning a Low carb vegtable and herb garden in a 40 foot circular bed. Wood planks and stepping stone paths will make it easy to access the plants. Companion planting should help by making happy, healthy plants. My bed will be planted in an open space in the middle of my backyard to make sure the bed gets at least 6 hours of full sun. I will water when needed with water from the 4 rain barrels at each corner of my house. I will surround my circular bed with bamboo pole fencing to keep out the deer. Yes, there is a large grove of bamboo on my property. The lower 3 feet will have chicken wire to keep out the rabbits and squirrels. To prepare the beds, they will be solarized with clear plastic for 6 weeks to kill off weed seeds. Without digging, I will place a 6 inch layer of compost on the bare soil. (plastic removed) I probably will need to suppliment with commercial organic compost if I run out of my own homemade compost. The tomatoes will be started early in my house and transplanted when the soil warms up. All others will be sown in situ when recommended. I follow Reminders@gardenate.com for planting dates for my zone. I receive reminders from the site so I don’t miss times for planting etc. I will place 4 inches of straw mulch around the seedlings. I will apply Garden-Tone organic fertilizer when recommended.
