The CONVERSATION PIECE
TILE BACKSPLASH IN THE KITCHEN. Every time I walk in to a newly remodeled kitchen, my eye immediately checks out the tile backsplash. Maybe it is the color, design or artistic creation( or that I am simply obsessed with someday remodeling my own kitchen and I think about the tile backsplash way too often!), but I always want to learn more about the process of selecting this focal point. Usually, there is a great story behind each backsplash!
COLLECTIONS ON DISPLAY. It is hard to walk in to house where there is a collection displayed and NOT say a word. Obviously, the homeowner is passionate about his collection and certainly wants to share its history! Go ahead! Ask!!! You will probably learn more about this collection than you could ever imagineā¦. But learning to appreciate something new is always a gift! (BTW, if you come to our house, please ask my husband about his comic book collection!)
THE DINING ROOM SETTING: MIXING & MATCHING! I am a HUGE Martha Stewart fan. One thing she taught me is how to MIX AND MATCH at the dining room table. Use different place settings! Break out your grandmotherās soup bowls and mix them with your Pottery Barn plates! Use different plates, bowls, runners, glass, pottery and silverware, all on one table. Make it a feast and share the stories behind each item! It is an amazing topic of conversation at the dinner table!
SCULPTURED & GLASS FIXTURES IN THE BATHROOM! Just open up any design magazine; pages upon pages are devoted to the bathroom! Over the past few years, bathroom remodels are a MAJOR topic of conversation. Architects and Designers pride themselves on coming up with the perfect sanctuary to bathe, relax and retreat. Now artists and designers are now creating art fixtures (such as glass sinks) that are functional and stunningā¦ā¦. And of course, everyone is talking and writing about it!
THE MAGICAL ANTIQUE FIND! We have very close friends that are antique collectors. They go from estate sale to estate sale every weekend, seeking out that perfect treasure. Their antique collection is now massive ā but every item has a story that MUST be shared! They try to learn about each item: Where did it come from? Was there any information learned from the seller or owner? Are there special nicks or marks that have a story? Did they purchase this antique for just a few dollars, and know that they turn around and can now sell it on Ebay for a small fortune?
Some friends have told us that they are beautiful. Many think they are strange. For us, we embrace these eclectic plant holders and always talk about it when we are in the courtyard, eating dinner and sipping a glass of wine. We know very little about the artist and creator, but we appreciate the conversation that flows because they are here.
We welcome you to share stories and pictures of YOUR CONVERSATION PIECES!
