Postcards From Christmas Around the World
Let’s make like Santa and pack up the reindeer and sleigh. We’re traveling the globe to see how others do the holidays
Find new and creative inspiration for your Christmas decorations this year by looking to a variety of homes around the world. There are plenty of style tips here to help you get your home Yuletide-ready, no matter where you live.
Outdoor party in Australia. For Santa, it’s a balmy Christmas Eve when he stops in Australia, and since it’s summer, Christmas is outdoors. This table has a natural look, with a floral tablecloth, a beautiful floral centerpiece and a string of decorations on the brick wall.
One with nature in New Zealand. Across the Tasman Sea, New Zealanders do likewise and often celebrate Christmas outdoors. They stretch out the picnic tables and pull up the chairs for a casual celebration with family and friends. This table, in a beautiful garden setting, sports a small wooden tree and linens in red, green and white.
Rustic style in Russia. This room in Russia looks as though it could be Santa’s workshop. A real tree brings the fragrance of Christmas. Nearby are an old-school rocking horse, a basket of holly, and presents wrapped and ready to be opened.
Chic color in Sweden. This Swedish home bursts with color. Paper streamers grace the Christmas tree, decorations hang above the windows and in the corner, cupcakes and other treats cover the table — and everything matches the rainbow of Eames chairs.
Stylish high-rise in Hong Kong. A bushy Christmas tree decorates the corner of this Hong Kong apartment, adorned with colorful and glistening embellishments.
Modern manners in Singapore. This simple Christmas setup is well-suited to Singapore’s modern and minimalist apartments. A pared-back tree with silver decorations, and lights shining brightly above, waits for Santa.
Real fir in Germany. This natural Christmas tree in Germany has plenty of fun and colorful decorations, and a web of fairy lights on the floor in front of it.
Designer decor in Italy. Of course an Italian Christmas has designer furniture. Verner Panton’s iconic chairs surround Eero Saarinen’s Tulip table, which holds a glass bowl of Christmas decorations, flowers and the all-important bottle of bubbles.
The writing’s on the wall in the Netherlands. Fairy lights are strung across this lush Christmas tree in Amsterdam. The words on the wall behind it translate to “O Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches!”
On-trend elegance in France. It’s cold in France during the Christmas season, which makes this cozy room extra welcoming. It features a gray palette layered with texture, a thickly decorated Christmas tree, a stocking, a star and knickknacks on the mantel.
Let there be light in the U.K. It’s Christmas in a conservatory in this home in England. Flourishes of red berries and plenty of greenery enliven the neutral color palette and furniture.
Family feast in Ireland. This atmospheric kitchen and dining area is all set for Christmas dinner with family and friends. There are plenty of seats to go around, a Christmas tree for presents, and lots of fresh flowers decorating the table.
Eclectic in the U.S. Holiday decorations take a rustic turn in this home: The tree is laced with decorations; straw hats form the shape of a second tree on the wall, topped with a star; and a table is piled high with pine cones and chestnuts.
Snow white wonder in Canada. The final stop on our world tour is Canada, where this white room is as crisp as the snow outside. The decorations are understated, with greenery and stockings on the mantel, and “joy” lighting up the room.
