I have had multiple people recommend Lightroom so decided to look into it. Am I reading right that now the software is cloud-based and requires a subscription to use? This is the situation I have been trying to avoid. I need software that will put metadata so it transfers and doesn't require a specific program (sorry I don't trust 1/3 of these companies will be around 100 years from now when my great grandkids are wanting to view photos). Plus we don't have unlimited internet in our area so cloud-based is the last thing I want - I will go broke in data charges, much less the subscription. I want software I can use, at home, with files staying local that I can just back up to external drives and only upload what I want to actually print. I inherited an archive going back generations I need to digitize.

Lightroom does not strip your metadata if you "break up" with them while many companies do. But yes, they are a subscription model. A desktop solution is Mylio https://mylio.com/ that also syncs to the cloud but keeps your photos on your desktop as well. There is a bit of a learning curve but if they do go out of business you don't lose your core file system on your computer.

There are two versions of Lightroom. The Cloud-based version, Lightroom CC which is subscription-based and syncs the pictures to the Adobe cloud. But there is also a one-time license, desktop version of Lightroom (Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC 2015 or Lightroom 6) which is great for managing your personal library locally on your PC. But Adobe makes it hard to find and purchase (Their web site pushes you to the cloud version). And from what I understand it will be the last "desktop" version supported. A shame. It is a great tool.
