Water feature
A courtyard garden is another classic Japanese garden. This one has the standard design elements — gravel, water, accent tree — but with a contemporary twist. Rather than a natural-looking pond and a soft-edge gravel patio, usually the hallmarks of a Japanese garden, straight edges border the tiered water feature and patio. The accent tree is thin but tall, rather than kept low.
Create visual impact - If you want to take things a little further, you can double up or triple the urns in a line to make a larger impact to the space. These urns lined up in a row ooze sophistication, simplicity and style, yet they are a relatively cost-effective way of incorporating a water feature into an outdoor space.
Pipes are embedded within each of the three towers and connect to their respective copper spouts. Water drains into a 1½-inch pile of river rocks, creating a gentle splash. A copper pan underneath collects the water for recirculation by way of the feature's single pump, located in the Cor-Ten steel box at the base. An indoor wall switch controls the fountain.
he pebble floor of this pond gives extra texture to the design, yet a pure black reflective surface could have been achieved with black pond dye added to the water. This also would have the benefit of blocking light, which would help prevent the growth of algae and keep the pond in the spotless state demanded of minimalist design. Any water feature used in minimalist designs must be perfect in construction and maintenance, and care must taken with water levels, pond hygiene and even the disguising of any pond lining.
Add a water feature. Your garden will not feel like a tranquil retreat if you can hear the sounds of busy streets or highway traffic. Mask the noise of the surrounding city with the soothing sound of running water. Even a small water feature that incorporates a fall, splash, gurgle or trickle can be very effective in distracting a listener from unwanted urban sounds.
Taking the timber ‘floor’ of the garden in a vertical direction to morph into walls is a clever way to make a small space feel more unified and, therefore, appear larger. The inset bluestone water feature continues the lovely curve of the wall, completing this beautiful illusion.
