Room of the Day: Bold Blue Hub for Laundry and Crafts
With its bright cabinets, graphic wallpaper and barn-style doors, this space is both pretty and practical
With three active kids and lots of clothes to wash, these homeowners wanted a laundry room that could be easily accessed from anywhere in the house. They settled on a centrally located second-floor location and decided to include a craft area for the kids as well.
Because the room would be highly visible — it’s the first thing you see when you walk up the stairs and it also can be seen from outside when you drive up to the house — they knew it had to look great.
Because the room would be highly visible — it’s the first thing you see when you walk up the stairs and it also can be seen from outside when you drive up to the house — they knew it had to look great.
Designer Kristi Patterson put the sink, washer and dryer to the sides of the room so that views into the space would be of the work area, artwork, blue cabinets and wallpaper rather than the more functional areas.

The laundry and craft room can be seen through windows at the front of the house. It’s on the second floor, to the left of the home’s front door.

Laundry and Craft Room of the Day
Location: Independence, Minnesota
Size: About 100 square feet (9.3 square meters); 16 by 6 feet
Designer: Kristi Patterson of Grace Hill Design
Patterned wallpaper and colored cabinets make the laundry and craft hub easy on the eyes. Schoolhouse lights create a bright, stylish atmosphere.
The quartz countertop allows plenty of room for folding clothes and working on craft projects. A hanging rod offers space for drying delicates. The large sink makes it easy to soak and clean up paint brushes and other art supplies. An open area below the counter can be used to tuck away laundry baskets or pull up stools for a work station. Light gray ceramic floor tile was chosen for durability.
