The 10 Most Popular Nursery Photos of 2016
Kiddie themes were out, while smart design choices that can grow with baby reigned
Looking at the most popular nursery photos uploaded to Houzz in 2016, it’s easy to see that new parents were planning ahead. The owners of these nurseries worked with designers to choose furniture and accessories that could either grow up with their children or be repurposed somewhere else in the house later on. One example, inexpensive wall decals, packed the big design punch of wallpaper but could easily be switched out in the future. Over-the-top themes and babyish styles were out, but a sense of playfulness and nurturing remained.
10. The ever-expanding selection of wall decals has made them more popular than ever in today’s nurseries. They add a playful touch that can be removed with ease when kids outgrow them. Here, gold triangles punctuate a white wall. Dark paint on the doors adds contrast, while the overall look is calm and serene.
9. Relaxing gray was a popular choice for nurseries this year. Another good move is a soft rug for crawling and playing as kids grow.
8. Houzzers were also drawn to bold graphic touches for nurseries. When choosing something semipermanent like wallpaper, black and white is a smart choice. It’s versatile and can work with a range of colors such as the light aqua on the wainscoting in this nursery. Wood on the mirror and chest add warmth to the color palette.
7. Nursery furniture has come a long way. This rocker was made for late-night feedings but would fit right in a chic living room or a teenager’s bedroom. Pops of pink, a flock of butterflies and a mobile of oversize tassels accentuate the design.
6. This large-scale mural hit it big with Houzz readers this year. A photo that designer Rebecca Zajac snapped of an Alaskan mountain range when she was pregnant served as the inspiration. Another popular nursery move was layering rugs, which works well atop hardwoods or with wall-to-wall carpeting. Here, Zajac layered a super-soft sheepskin rug on a chevron-patterned area rug.

5. Designer Marie Flanigan used a color palette inspired by the work of The Rifle Paper Co. in this lovely nursery. Wall hangings and a wallpapered ceiling add extra layers of cream, pink, tangerine, gold and gray.

4. Using an animal theme doesn’t have to turn a nursery into a mini zoo. By including a grid of sweet animal images identically framed and matted and a vintage wooden giraffe, this room incorporates the theme within a sophisticated color and texture palette.
3. Pastels remained a favorite choice for nurseries. And soft mint green is a good option for those who are waiting for baby to arrive to find out if it’s a boy or a girl. Again, decals won out over wallpaper on the accent wall.
2. A vibrant area rug infuses this nursery with color, while a whimsical composition of decals lines the walls with birch trees and boldly colored woodland creatures. The classic Eames glider will become an heirloom, while the dresser-changing table will serve as a useful piece of furniture that will grow along with this child. And long after she’s left the nest, her dresser would work well in a guest room.
1. The most popular nursery photo of 2016 balances straight lines and gentle curves. The crib, trim and two-toned wall paint provide a clean-lined backdrop. The circular shaggy rug is a soft spot for baby to learn to crawl. To round things out more, the glider, pouf and chandelier bring in just the right amount of curves.
