Holiday DIY: A Colorful Pompom Garland
With just 5 items, you can make a pompom garland that will pep up your holiday decor with color
Whether your holiday decorations are already hung with care or still waiting to be taken out of the box, this easy-to-make pompom garland will be a colorful addition to your holiday home. With only a handful of items and a few minutes, you can add just the right amount of warmth and festivity to any space. This fun, fluffy pompom garland comes from fiber artist Linny Giffin of The Lemon Bowl, a makery in Washington, D.C.
Pompoms offer an unexpected playfulness to traditional holiday decor. They are easy to create and can make any vignette pop!
Before you begin, you may want to choose three to five colors of yarn. Play around with different palettes until you land on one that mixes well with your other decor.
For her holiday garland, Giffin chose a beachy sunset palette. The pinks and peaches are a creative spin on Christmas red and green but still complement traditional colors.

Supplies
- Yarn
- Business card or piece of cardboard
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
Instructions
1. Wrap the yarn around a business card or similarly sized piece of cardboard until you have a thick layer. You can experiment with how many times you wrap the yarn around the card. It will depend on how thick your yarn is and how dense you want your pompoms to be.

2. Once you’ve finished wrapping the yarn, use scissors to cut it next to the card.
3. Next, cut a piece of yarn about 1 foot long. Center the card lengthwise on top of this piece.
4. Gently slide the yarn off the business card and onto the center of the piece of yarn.
5. Use the piece of yarn to tie the bundle together.
6. Cut through all the loops of yarn all the way around the bundle.
After you’ve cut the loops, your bundle should look like this.
7. Trim the strands of yarn until you get an evenly shaped ball that’s the size you want.
8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 with different colors of yarn until you have enough pompoms to make your garland.
9. Thread a needle and poke it through the center of a pompom, leaving the thread attached to the spool. Giffin used regular sewing thread, but you could also use string or yarn.
10. Continue threading the pompoms.
11. After you have threaded all the pompoms, center them so that you have 6 inches of thread on each end to allow for draping. Cut the thread and tie each end to keep the pompoms from sliding off and to create loops for hanging the garland.
12. Hang your garland on the wall, adjusting the pompoms as needed so that they’re evenly spaced. Now you have a new holiday garland to liven up your room.
Giffin, left, co-owns The Lemon Bowl with Kathryn Zaremba and Holley Simmons. It’s a place where people come to learn new skills, get to know other makers and share their love of creating.
