The Most Popular Deck Photos of 2016
From the roof of a Montreal factory to the countryside of California, these outdoor rooms invited us in
Deck design just keeps getting better and better, so it’s no surprise that 2016 brought us some of the best decks we’ve ever seen. Carefully sited, comfortably furnished, thoughtfully lit and sometimes even heated, these beautiful outdoor rooms are homeowners’ favorite spots to read, gather with friends, eat, tell campfire stories and more. Features like outdoor fireplaces and fire pits have extended their usage to at least three seasons, while comfortable furniture makes them spots that are hard to leave. What kind of features would you incorporate into your dream deck?
10. There’s a cheerful modern spirit inherent in many Austin, Texas, homes, and it’s easy to spot on this deck. An L-shaped built-in bench, graphic pillows, cozy fire pit, whitewashed wall, bright turquoise Eames shell chairs and the fabulous lights make this the place to be after the hot Texas sun sets.
9. A variety of materials and a design that stands out make this San Francisco yard a big winner. The kitchen-living room doors open completely to make this series of outdoor rooms a natural extension of the living space, complete with a fire pit, sunning area and alfresco dining area. The mix of concrete and wood on the terraced decks, patios and walls is carefully balanced, and the design has turned the challenging grade changes into assets.
8. Built-in deck architecture was a big hit with Houzzers this year. On this Montreal roof deck, a custom bench is practically begging someone to take a nap on it, while a pergola adds to a cozy enclosed feeling even though the deck sits atop a large urban factory building.

7. The more we embrace these spaces as outdoor rooms, the more the deck furniture resembles indoor furniture. Elements like deep cushions, upholstered ottomans, rugs and toss pillows are the new normal outdoors thanks to fabrics that can stand up to moisture and direct sunlight.
6. No pink “Gather” sign needed to draw the crowds to this deck, but it sure looks adorable. Tables lined up under white umbrellas strung with lights, pink geraniums in rustic wooden planters, indoor dining chairs and a lovely garden make this deck a favorite place to gather for outdoor meals.
5. Small, walled-in decks often have such a blah, claustrophobic feel (imagine plain gray cement-block walls rising up eight feet from this deck). But this design transforms what could have been monolithic fencing into a lovely accent. The verticality of the fence is broken up in a brilliant way — a row of planters, a line of evergreen shrubs and wood slats topped by the silvery leaves of small olive trees.
4. Outdoor fireplaces held steady as one of the most popular home design search terms for 2016. The immediate outdoor space off this farmhouse has it all: porches that lead to a marvelous deck that centers around a fireplace. Cushy furniture, throw blankets, a roaring fire and plenty of local Napa wines make this a deck the owners can enjoy almost year-round.
3. This modest deck is another California wine country dream — a charming little private patio right off the bedroom. The pergola gives it a more enclosed porch-like feel without cutting off the sky. It’s a perfect place to end the day with someone you love.
2. This deck is a wonderful spot for movie night. The custom lounge seating pops up from the decking and fold away flat when the owners want to put out other furniture or dance under the stars.
1. Hugo the dog agrees, this is one fabulous deck. With two large awnings for shade as well as a sunny area, inviting furniture and that bright California light, why would anyone ever go inside?
