Save space with swing-arm sconces. Sconces are great space savers, freeing up room on tabletops or even making it possible to do without a table altogether. Often seen bedside, swing-arm sconces can also work wonders in a tight corner in the living room or above a desk. Renters take note: Most lighting stores offer swing-arm sconces with cord covers, so you can simply plug them into the wall.
Tell a color story. Whether you're beginning a story or rewriting one, use color to make a splash. Transform your kitchen into a best seller by painting just the island a hip and catchy color. Don't want to stop there? Paint the same color inside your glass upper cabinets. Now that's a book that can be judged by its cover.

Tip: Rethink design details If your kitchen is not quite wide enough for an island, rethink your counter. Just a little jut away from the walls — as in this kitchen — ups the available workspace by a lot.

Don't get hemmed in by space-hogging staircases. Ship-ladder-style stairs and spiral staircases are huge space savers. Just make sure you're within your local building code requirements.
Light into stair wells, visually light.
How about that upstairs hallway? Interior walls in hallways do not normally have or need insulation. Wouldn't that be a fabulous place to glean a bit of extra storage? If it's a load bearing wall, perhaps it could be designed with support columns between the bookshelves. Not sure how difficult this would be to add after-the-fact. Like the railing
mesh for the risers, glass railings, great light flow.

If those skylights face south, you could see the moon and stars at night...
The DVD and cable box can be mounted anywhere in the room. They do not have to be below the TV. Shallow book case balancing the size and shape of the TV. Typically a single IR eye is all that is needed near the TV. Cables are run from this eye back to a blackbox and from the blackbox back to the DVD player, cable, etc. Have your local A/V guy do this for you. It need not be complicated and in most cases you will only need one remote control for everything.

As a lifelong small-space dweller, I can tell you having to unpile and repile stacks of cooking racks, muffin tins and cookie sheets to make a simple batch of baked goods is a real deterrent. Slotted drawers are the solution.

These drum-style fixtures punctuate the ceiling like buttons on a white shirt. Their large scale feels appropriate for the volume of this corridor and helps to make it cozier.

Do you have an extra-wide hallway? Maybe you could install bookcases or cabinetry to increase the function of a previously unused space. Books grouped artfully can be beautiful.
