DIY: These Easy-to-Make Sprays Freshen Rooms Naturally
Follow these simple recipes to create aromatic room sprays you can use or give as holiday gifts
Each season brings its own traditions and holidays to share with friends and family, and for many of us, those traditions include a signature scent. Follow along to create your own room spray to leave in a guest room, give as a host gift or holiday gift, or keep in your kitchen or bathroom year-round. The process takes very little time and requires just a few supplies. Try some of the suggestions or experiment with your own holiday or everyday blend.
Materials
- Glass bottle with spray top, 8 or 4 fluid ounces
- Distilled water
- Vodka or witch hazel
- Essential oils
- Blank sticker labels (I used name labels)
- Fine-tip permanent marker
Essential oils are typically available at local health food stores. A variety of brands and sizes can also be found in the cosmetics or apothecary section at a pharmacy or department store.
Consider mixing your oils in a small bowl to test the scents as they marry or blend together. There are several recipes for room spray; here are an everyday blend and a winter holiday blend I created.
Everyday Lemon + Lavender Spray
- 25 drops lavender essential oil
- 15 drops lemon essential oil
Winter Holiday Spray
- 2 drops orange essential oil
- 15 drops peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Start by measuring out the vodka or witch hazel and using a test bottle that is similar in size to your final container.
For the 8-ounce spray bottle, I measured 1½ ounces of vodka using a jigger from the bar, then filled the rest of the bottle with distilled water. Depending on the size of your bottle, you can adjust the ratios accordingly.
Using an eyedropper, carefully add your oils, one by one, to the alcohol and water mixture and shake well. The alcohol or witch hazel helps keep the oil and water from separating.
After you shake, add dried herbs or flowers if desired.

Thoroughly clean and dry the outside of your bottle before adding your label. You can personalize your label by hand or using your computer.
I created the label here using a permanent marker on a stick-on name label, then cut it to the desired size. Another simple approach would be to use your computer to design a simple logo and print it straight from your printer.

I repurposed a spray bottle I already had, but you can find bottles online and at some health, grocery and home stores.
Now place the bottle in your laundry room, kitchen or guest room and enjoy. Or wrap it up to give as a gift.
