Room of the Day: Master Bathroom Loses a Tub and Gains Sophistication
Pale gray wall paint and a spacious new shower help a dated-looking bathroom achieve spa-like serenity
Basic off-the-shelf cabinets, materials and fixtures made this Chicago bathroom look and feel much older than its seven years. Armed with a love of traveling and fancy hotels, the condo owners embarked on a remodel that transformed the space into a contemporary spa-like retreat worthy of a four-star rating.
AFTER: The owners worked with Ariel Darmoni of 123 Remodeling to remove the tub and install a shower with a larger footprint and a glass wall that makes the narrow space appear more roomy.
A fresh coat of pale gray paint over the saccharine peach color on the walls achieves the hotel-like look the owners were going for.
Wall paint: Evening Shadow SW-7662, Sherwin-Williams

The large-format wall tile in the shower didn’t lay out on the rear wall in full pieces, and cutting partial pieces to balance on each side wasn’t ideal, so Darmoni installed the wall tile at the edges of the back wall, worked inward, then filled the center portion with a vertical strip of pebbles. Positiong the staggered cuts on either side of the pebble strip gave the impression of complete tile pieces.
Corner shelves on each side of the shower store soaps and shampoo. A wall-mounted fold-down teak shower seat offers a spot to sit beneath one of two new rain shower heads. The step-off mat outside the shower is also teak.
Shower wall tile: Antracita unpolished, 12 by 24 inches, Orion collection, Roca; floor tile: Gris unpolished, 12 by 24 inches, Orion collection, Roca; shower floor tile: 12 by 12 inches, CC Porcelain, Roca; decorative rock tile: black, 12 by 12 inches, Hudson, Roca

Chunky, square-shaped chrome fixtures chosen by the homeowners stand out against the tile. A handheld shower offers flexibility.

Two rectangular-shaped sinks add dimension and, with the faucet design, reference a subtle square theme found elsewhere in the bathroom.
To help keep the budget in check, the homeowners bought the vanity base online to help offset the cost of the shower fixtures. The vanity base has two large drawers with concealed interior pullout trays and silent, self-closing hardware.
Two new wall-mounted frameless medicine cabinets provide even more storage. Installed side by side, they create the appearance of a single, large mirror.
Vanity base: Vicenza 72-inch double bowl in Ash Grey, Madeli; countertop: Quartz X-Stone white slab, Madeli; sinks: X-Stone Vessel in Glossy White, Madeli; faucets: Zendo Tall Single Hole Faucet, Riobel; medicine cabinet: Madeli

BEFORE: The finishes jogged memories of the 1980s rather than the year in which the condo was built: 2009. In addition, the owners wanted to update the lighting and get rid of the shower-tub combo. Function wasn’t a concern, which worked out well for the owners because their condo’s association prohibited them from moving any plumbing.
