Guest Picks: An Artful Kid's Room
I love this beautiful mobile. It's a miniature work of art that would be just as appropriate for a nursery as it would be for a "tween" room.
A cozy spot to curl up and read books or draw is a must for an inspiring kid's room. I love the idea of a traditional, grown-up chair re-sized just for the kiddos.
This vintage Moroccan area rug would add a huge dose of color into the space. Plus, it's something you'd have forever. I'd layer it over a sisal rug in the center of the room.
This little silver pouf/ottoman is good for propping up your feet and can serve as extra seating in a pinch. It also adds a little pop of glam to the space — it's a definite "happy-maker."
West Elm is turning out amazing limited edition prints lately. I love this one for the gallery wall.
Another piece for the gallery wall. It's dreamy and lovely — perfect for a kid's room!
I love DwellStudio's playful take on taxidermy. This is a fun conversation piece for a kid's room. It injects just the right amount of whimsy!
I'm a big fan of sheer panels in a bedroom. If the space gets a lot of light, I'd layer these over wood slat blinds for better coverage.
The second big color element in the room (and a nice complement to that rug) is this playful chandelier from Urban Outfitters. Plus, it would be a worthy companion to that dreamy bed below.
This is a beautiful "forever" bed — for sure the star of the room! Since the footboard and the headboard are the same height, you could position it horizontally against a wall like a large daybed to allow for ample floor space for creating.
This bedding feels youthful and fun, but it's versatile enough to stand-up to room evolution; it's just as good for a seven year-old as it is for a seventeen year-old!
My girlies would go nuts for these adorable animal pillows. I think you can get a little bit crazy with the throw pillows in a kid's room. (They're a chicer alternative to a bed full of stuffed animals.)
A bookshelf filled with artful reads is a must. In the case of Symphony City, the story is just as lovely as the cover and the illustrations inside.
This is another must-have for every kid's bookshelf. It's a beautiful, thoughtful book about dreaming big dreams!
This is one of the best "hands-on" art books out there. It's full of fun, real-life art projects for kids. I'd definitely put this one on the bookshelf.
I love Jonathan Adler's sweet nightlight. It's perfect for keeping the kids mellow at bedtime, but it doesn't put out so much light that it disturbs their sleep.
These are a fun take on the ubiquitous chalkboard. I like that you can group several on a wall to make a larger chalkboard, or you can cut them into shapes!
Confession: I've wanted this pig bank in gold forever. It's just so fun and chic. I figure I can live vicariously through my kids by getting the hot pink one for their space. It will make them giggle and get them saving their pennies at the same time — a double bonus!Next: More ideas for kid's room decor
This photograph of my daughter taking in art at our local museum is what originally prompted the space. She always leaves brimming with ideas she wants to execute at home. My ideal "artful kid's room" would be a space that inspires her as much as an afternoon at a museum does.
