This may be a blessing in disguise because I have yet to see painted cabinets that did not need touching up in 3 years, more in touch ups in five, and plans for new cabinets in ten. Painted over a previously finished surface is expensive and just doesn't hold up well in a busy kitchen.
If you cannot afford to replace right now, just lighten up everything you can. I have an oak kitchen which I am very happy with, but since my cabinets are older, I went with a vintage look. In your inspiration pic, there is a pretty wood hood. It adds much to the picture. If you have an over the range microwave, consider a dedicated vent hood - it will pretty up the space a bit.
Here is my wood kitchens idea book. It has both newer and older, refreshed kitchens. I know your heart is set on painted, but if that is out of the budget, maybe you will see something you can do to make you like your kitchen a bit more.

Without seeing your kitchen, here are a couple of thoughts - remove a cabinet and replace with a small amount of shelving or consider removing the center panel of a couple of doors and replace with glass. Lighten the wall paint.
Many of my friends and family have similar kitchens and they are fine with them. Turn off HGTV for a while and maybe it won't bother you as much:)
