Study a beautiful interior design for ideas on achieving some of the magic at home
Interior designer Lauren Liess has some serious vision. We've already documented her entire space in a Houzz Tour and, as you can see, she took a less-than-desirable ranch layout and turned it into a light-filled example of elegance and style. Liess's living room is particularly great. While this exact look will always be unique to this room, you can achieve a similar feel in your space.

Lauren took this awesome star mirror and centered it over the mantel, making it the focal point of the room. Flanking this vignette are two upholstered slipper chairs, with a chandelier and cafe table offset to the side. The overall effect feels spacious, yet perfect for entertaining or conversing. In terms of artwork, only two paintings hang on the wall, both in a similarly mossy green color scheme. The sea captain painting is a slightly kitschy addition that adds a lot of character and whimsy to the feel of the room.
An acrylic table blends into the space, allowing a wispy fern and pair of parrot statutes to take the stage. Simple white curtains update the '50s-style windows.
A pair of iron nesting tables provide a place to set a drink; a unique birdcage lamp provides light to read. The amazing chartreuse velvet camelback sofa is tailored enough to be appropriate in a living room while also being overstuffed and comfortable enough for the family of four to lounge on.
Sunburst Antiqued Gold Wall Mirror by Two's Company®
This starburst mirror is on the small side, but you can hang it over the mantel or in another natural focal point of your living room. This piece sets the tone of the space.
Cast Horse Bust
Lauren has an actual antique bust on her mantel but this will achieve a similar effect. This goes on your mantel or a tablescape to add a dark object to ground all the light green, chartreuse and beige furnishings. For a more traditional look, buy a pair and set them symmetrically at opposite ends of the mantel.
Hunt Club Antler Trophy Reproductions Set by Two's Company®
It's almost hard to even see where Lauren hung her antler piece. Since this look has become a bit trendy, make sure you hang this addition in an obscure place as a way of layering. This definitely adds a touch of nature to the tailored look of the rest of the accessories.
Peekaboo Clear Coffee Table | CB2
This goes in front of your sofa. Add a green plant, either a fern or succulent, atop stacked art books for a casual coffeetable vignette.
Aidan Gray Ethan Chair in Black Leather
This chair provides an extra place for someone to sit by the cafe table in the corner. Buy two for a more formal look; stick to one to make the space more varied and eclectic.
Hand-painted Canaries
Two perching parrots go by the fern on the coffeetable, providing some objects to add an additional layer to the simplicity of the fern.
Charlemagne Chandelier
A slightly British move, hanging a wrought iron chandelier off-centered in the corner creates a mini area.
Rural Retreat IV by Leftbank Art
This landscape has a color scheme and impressionistic feel similar to the painting Lauren has hanging in her room. The key is to get something mossy green, and not too realistic in painting style.
Elderly Man with Pipe Painting
One of the most whimsical touches of the room is her vintage Sea Captain painting. This take on the same subject matter has a particularly good looking frame.
Tube Top Floor Lamp
This floor lamp blends into the scheme of the room, so that providing the light is all it really does without taking away from the arrangements on the wall.
Set of 2 Moreno Nesting Tables
Flank these nesting tables next to the sofa as a place to put a drink. A serious space saver, these tables are just big enough for a mid-size lamp that will provide reading light.
Marrakesh Slipper Chair by Windsor Smith Home
These beautiful slipper chairs are upholstered in a beige and white diamond-like pattern, blending into the rest of the room without being too boring.
