Japanese Barberry (Berberus thunbergii) is an invasive shrub in the Hudson Valley NY. It was originally brought into the US from Japan/Eastern Asia for use as an ornamental garden shrub and has become a widespread invasive growing in sun and semi shade areas. It spreads by seed, birds eat the berries and disperse the seed to new areas. The branches have small thorns.
