The Reading Nook
<subtitle>
Celebrate Read Across America Day by creating a cozy reading nook that invites you to settle in with a good book
ContemporaryIf your taste is a bit more modern, use your reading nook to test out new trends. It’s a small space so you don’t have to commit to anything major. Look for a bookcase with clean lines and a seating situation that’s comfortable but stylish. Incorporate accessories to show of your personality, like throw pillows and bookends. When decorating a space for reading, always include at least two lights—one that’s bright and easy on your eyes and one that’s softer for daytime reading.
EclecticIf your like most people, your taste in books is eclectic, so why shouldn’t your reading nook be? This space is a great place to decorate with things that inspire you or remind you of your favorite memoirs, travel diaries, classic novels or comic books. Let your style mimic the uniqueness of Dr. Seuss or the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. But remember, you’ll need a few things no matter how out of the box your nook is: a comfy place to sit or lie, good lighting and a warm throw so you can stay there for hours.
TraditionalIf your style is traditional, think of your reading nook as a mini library. Picture tall shelves with ladders, wingback arm chairs and leather-bound books. To distill all that into a nook-sized space, decide what’s most important to you. If you have lots of books, choose a bigger bookshelf and stick to one leather chair. Big family? Place a slender bookcase in the corner and focus on a loveseat and ottomans instead. Remember: you can always keep books elsewhere in the house.
