I started out with 9 hostas, which I bought at a local nursery,so I could get something to grow at the shady north side of my home. I gathered rocks, and added compost and old leaves, and made a long narrow bed up the hill alongside my house. Then I planted my hostas, none of which were the 'green and white ones'. Well it turned out that voles also liked you to make nice fluffy beds, because it is easier for them to dig! They promptly ate 6 of my nine hostas! I almost gave up then, because I had never heard of voles before. This was back in 2002,my first time with hosta. I still have the surviving ones including Tokudama FC which is still growing in my garden south of the house. It was almost eaten to death, but I replanted it with just one tiny root, and 1 leaf. It still isn't very big,and yeah,I could've replaced it,because they still sell them at my local nursery. Well,to make a long story a little shorter;in 2003,I started what is now my garden, south of the house across the driveway. I had to build a staircase down the hill from the driveway, and it was a literal jungle down there! There was what seemed to be a natural path through the woods,so I mulched a path through the woods to the bottom of the hill. At first I added hostas along the path and up the hill on the left side. Then,in 2006,I started the new garden, back up the hill, on the other side. Now,over 300+ hostas later,I have a pretty good garden. Still not garden-tour worthy, but I like it! Phil
