Via Conca Doro
From Dirt to Dream: A home building journey
Although I've fantasized about building a dream home since I was a kid, it was never a reality until now. I'm trying to recall when the dream started ... it was sometime back in the spring of 2014 when we came to the realization that, any home we could afford to buy was going to be second rate. So we got the crazy idea to start looking at land. We thought, if we could just get onto some land cheaply--like even put a manufactured home on it for starters, then we could gradually build our "dream" home.
Finding the perfect lot
After living in Poway for two years, we realized how much we appreciate the geography of north San Diego county and knew we wanted something in the region north of the 56--not quite as far as Carlsbad, and west of the 15. By summer of 2014, we finally tracked down a realtor who was knowledgeable in land sales and were in full swing with our search. Ironically, we located the property we ended up purchasing before we connected with the realtor. It was one of the very first properties we viewed. And, after looking at least 50 properties in all over the course of a year, there was no comparison to how we felt about Via Conca Doro.
We went into contract with the land in September of 2014 and just closed escrow in October of 2015. The extended contract period--which began as 90 days, had to do with a number of unknowns and red flags that kept popping up. Considering this was raw land, it seemed like a short list of things to iron out during our due diligence: power, water, fire department requirements, and septic (since sewer was not an option). I will go into more detail, but each one of these items has had it's hurdles to investigate.
We can only hope at this point that the hurdles don't turn into pole vaults. ;)

We like this look, but with fewer beams.
