Hens & Chicks.....really like this and what's growing next to it! The design for this Palo Alto property, developed with Fergus Garber Young Architects, was a direct outgrowth of client needs, sustainability interests, and neighborhood context. Through collaboration with the family, we responded to the wooded character of the neighborhood with bold, lush plantings that reflected their streamlined, modernist tastes. The clients, moreover, sought a garden in which to immerse themselves in nature and to be together as a family, a goal we achieved through strategic placement of plants, furnishings, and focal points such as a dramatic fire pit. The new garden offers generous outdoor spaces for gathering, striking inside/outside views, contrasting textures, and year-round color. In addition to creating a sense of privacy through effectively layered foliage, we designed and installed a corten steel sculptural screening element in the front entry which provides a porous buffer from neighbors and street. This was so successful that, in response to the owners’ request, we detailed a dynamic water element, also of corten, that terminates the views from the living area of the house into the ...

Annabelle Hydrangeas..... ynch Landscape and Tree Service, Inc. Hi Ghrhome, thanks for your interest in our photo! The white flowered shrubs on top of the wall are Annabelle Hydrangeas. (Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle') This is a fantastic border shrub, with it's huge white flowers that can reach up to 1 foot or more in diameter! They typically mature to be a bit wider than they are tall, usually about 4' tall x 5' wide. They can handle nearly all conditions as far as sun vs shade goes, but preferably, they would enjoy some aftenoon protection from the hot sun. Like most hydrangeas, they LOVE water, and can take a couple seasons to fully establish and be self sufficient unless supported by an irrigation system. Happy Planting!
Sloped landscape. Blue Spruce info: Aura Landscapers Ltd That Spruce is a newly planted Montgomery Spruce. It grows to about 15 to 20". A similar but smaller tree is a Sester's Dwarf Spruce - grows to about 8'. We've only recently started planting them so haven't seen a full grown one yet. Both are hardy trees for here in Alberta, Canada. 0 Likes September 2, 2014 at 12:44PM rbcola lok up Sesters dwarf spruce......but couldn't determine how well it would do in Zone 6, Southern Indiana. Would like to incorporate 1-2 in our front foundation plantings - sunny location.
Need to learn more .....like the softness of this evergreen. Like the seasonal color.......There's got to be some reason why I can't use it! I just don't know what.....must ask GG. 2. Add a dense lower tier. Dwarf Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans Nana') always reminds me of a fat little dumpling. It has a rather loose mounding shape and a soft, feathery texture. I love evergreens that change in some way during the year; this one does that nicely, with blue-green summer foliage that takes on a purple cast during winter. Being evergreen, this conifer provides year-round interest. USDA zones: 5 to 8 Water requirement: Moderate Light requirement: Full sun or partial shade (so it's ideal for planting under a deciduous tree) Mature size: 7 feet tall and up to 7 feet wide When to plant: Spring or fall

Can't get over the fact that the plants used in Switzerland are similar to what we use here in the midwest.
It is a perennial. It will do just fine in zone 6 and in full sun to some shade. Creeping Jenny grows in rock gardens/non ideal situations so I would think it will survive in clay soil.
.....Just love the grass walkway between the landscaping. There are roses, salvias, peonies, poppies, echinacea, daylilies, playtcodon, siberian iris, knautia, geraniums.........

Reclaiming a traditional front yard and turning it into a usable outdoor living space can be a wonderful thing. Many front yards are not used regularly because they are not private or inviting. For places where water use is an issue like CA or the SW, replacing lawn with garden is a fabulous idea if you replace it with water wise plants. Other things to consider include local ordinances or HOA rules that may limit how you landscape your front yard. And always best to consult with a local nursery, landscape designer or landscape architect for more information and help with your plans. Good luck!

Assume this is a creeping thyme between the stepping stones. Encouraged to see it in a NE landscape.
Love it! Love it! Peaceful, park-like setting. Perhaps behind house; under trees. Instead of stone patio - pea gravel, budget.
Dog run idea.... DelRio pea gravel is a good one. Don't use landscape cloth underneath. Gravel drains well and no muddy feet! Like the plants inside and outside....provides shady spots for "sunbathing"! Perfect!
Here we go again.....like the stepping levels.
Specialty Gardens The creeping phlox pictured here: PHLOX SUBULATA - needs plenty of sun to thrive so I wouldn't recommend it where it gets no direct sunlight. Instead, PHLOX STOLONIFERA or WOODLAND CREEPING PHLOX has a somewhat similar low creeping habit, and in spring it gets smothered in small flowers held up on 6" - 8" stems in the color range of blues, pinks, or white. WOODLAND CREEPING PHLOX has different cultural requirements, PREFERRING MOIST, HUMUS-RICH, PARTIAL TO MOISTLY SHADE.

Eggleston Farkas Architects We used a similar detail at our Boat Bay House: by Eggleston Farkas... by Eggleston Farkas...Boat Bay House .What we did was to use weathering Corten steel. The rust layer on Corten forms a protective coating and greatly reduces the long term corrosion of the material. You can find out some info about it on Wikipedia athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weathering_steel. Pay attention to the section regarding staining and continuing corrosion if the material remains in constant contact with water. I also believe that the runoff from Corten is corrosive to aluminum. Nonetheless, it's a great material when used properly, developing a beautiful patina over time.
