Marci - beer is basically just more delicious seltzer water. So you get your kegerator and what is a called a Cornelius keg (or ball lock keg) which costs maybe $75. A kegerator is just a small refrigerator that has two lines - one connected to a tap and one connected to a CO2 tank (all of which comes with the kegerator, but you have to get the gas which is relatively easy). You connect those two lines to a keg full of water (3-5 gallons depending on the keg size). Turn on the gas at high pressure, and it carbonates the water within a day or so. Then just turn the pressure down a bit, leave the keg in there, open the tap and you are pouring carbonated water. You can add syrup/flavor to the keg but I don’t recommend it - you need to clean the lines more often. I make syrups and add in the glass. But of course, you don’t have to add any flavor.
Hope that helps. I will admit this has some not insignificant up front costs, but I love my set up (I have another tap for beer so that helps too).
