DIY Project: Frilly Floral for a Child's Wall
See How to Make a Fanciful Piece of Girl's Room Decor in No Time
Ever wonder what you can do with all those fake flowers you see at the dollar store? Make art out of them! This DIY project cost just a few dollars and can be done in one night while catching up on your favorite movie.
I came up with the idea while in the dollar store looking for inexpensive inspiration to work with a little girl's bedroom redesign. I was on a tight budget. I do not usually work with fake flowers, but for this kid's room, I made an exception. When bunched together, multiple fake flower tops add a colorful, feminine touch. See how to do it:

For this "Pink It Up" girl's bedroom I was looking for something big to soften the feel of the large wood headboard. The parents wanted to skip the box spring until their daughter was tall enough to safely get in and out of bed, so even more of the headboard is exposed. The new DIY artwork takes the focus off all that heavy wood.
You can pick up canvas boards at craft stores and art supply stores.
My daughter and I had fun picking out the flowers. I used mostly yellow for this project with a few hot pink ones to add color contrast.
1. Pop the flower tops off the stems. They should easily come right off. I placed my faux blooms in a plastic bag.
2. Find a flat surface near an electrical outlet. Protect your table from glue spills, and plug in your glue gun. Place your canvas board and flower tops on the table as shown here. This is a good time to turn on your movie.
3. Start gluing the flowers to the canvas board. Add a generous amount of hot glue to the bottom of the flower and place it on the board. The glue won't be seen when finished. It doesn't matter where you start placing the flowers; I began in one corner and worked my way out.
Your canvas board should start to look like this. I used mostly yellow flowers but added a few hot pink ones for variety.
As soon as the popcorn runs out, you are done.
Extra-credit step: Add lightweight flying friends such as birds and butterflies using thin floral wire, available at craft and floral stores. I found these very thin metal butterflies at a dollar store (they were part of inexpensive outdoor chimes).
I wrapped the wire around the wings, pulled it through underneath the butterfly, then twisted the wire around one of the flowers already attached to the board. Twist the wire around a few more times to steady it. It should move when touched, but stay attached to the installation.
Optional: To soften the edges, I added a narrow yellow ribbon around the sides of the canvas board using fabric glue.

This frilly canvas can be used in any kids space, including bedrooms, nurseries and play areas.
