Luxury Underfoot: The Art of the Rug
The right rug can utterly transform a room, giving it a traditional, contemporary, or classical feel. In seeking the right rug, I use the same standards for selecting artwork. Whatever your preference -- florals or geometrics, silk or wool, round or runner -- the most important thing is to find a floor covering that truly speaks to you. Here are a few of my favorite applications.
I've always loved red focal points -- as couches, wall colors, and, as shown here, rugs. With a bold, solid-red rug, you can get away with going monochromatic for most all of the other furnishings. A solid-colored rug is a great way to add a splash of color without worrying about clashing patterns with artwork.
Stripes are a great way to create the illusion of a longer, larger space. In this shot, contrasting colors and widths make the room-sized floor covering a visually arresting design element.
