Modern Classics: Vitra Algue
Interconnecting plastic pieces can be sculpture, screen or wall art
These interesting pieces may have caught your eye lately, and chances are, you thought, "What the heck is that?" Well, it's called Algue and it's made by Vitra. They are little plastic pieces shaped like plant skeletons that can be snapped together into endless compositions, taking on a life of their own.
Algues
This is what I call "Algue Extreme." Thousands of pieces of it have been artfully hooked together to form what looks to me like a whole lot of seaweed!
Vitra Algue Elements / Six Pack
Here is a peek at the individual pieces. They are sold in packs of 25 or 6; a pack of 25 can be linked together to cover an area of approximately one square meter.
Hung behind a translucent window or a backlit scrim, the Algue-covered wall looks like it's covered in a wonderful red vine.
The pieces can be locked together to form a screen or room divider.
Here a smaller amount of Algue provides a textured wall in this black and white contemporary room.
The pieces can be composed into whatever shape you please. Here it provides a large piece of art in an open, gallery-like space.
Algue works outside as well. Here it makes the view a lot more interesting and increases the feeling of privacy.
